Need help with Pokemon Fire Red, "The 1M sub-circuit board is not installed."

Hi, earlier today I downloaded VisualBoyAdvance-1.7.2 and 1636_-_Pokemon_-_Fire_Red_Version_(U) but whenever I try to play the game I get this message about the "1M sub-circuit", then when I play the game I can't save. I've tried numerous searches on google but all I can find is advice that doesn't fix the problem, or people saying IPS patches or save patches, without actually giving advice about where/how to use the patches. I was hoping maybe somebody here would be so kind as to help me get this game working properly.
