well yersteday nigth i was downloading some .part.rar files of spiderman 1 and 2 for the GC, when my comp goes onto the save screen mode, stuff gets odd i move the mouse so it goe to my desktop and it crashed i got a black screen of dead, seeing as nothing i know of works i turn off the comp.

now when i try to boot in onto windows it says to me that there is a missing file, previous to the blue screen it gives me a set of instructions it says:

'1) insert the windows vista home basic CD

    2) select languages

    3) select Fix '

in case i cant fix windows vista i need to kn ow how can i transfer my files to linux and how to erase the partition from my hard drive, so i can install either 7 or XP

To boot the CD of vista you need to boot into the BIOS settings.
From there I can't help you.

If you want to copy all your files from Windows to Linux you can open the partition of Windows and copy the files from there.
    If not I am lost.

Wine compatibility with Windows programs is really low.

Depending on your BIOS you need to rapidly press a key (F8 if I'm correct...don't take risks because I don't know if it's true though)

    Whats new.

Duncan,do you have any type of Vista/recovery disc.If you do,press esc/del/f2 or whatever it says to enter bios/setup and change the 1st boot device to cd/dvdrom.Reboot with the disc in and follow it from there and see if you can repair Vista.Dont format or delete anything if it cant repair it YET

does your bios allow you to boot from an external drive, and if so is it set up to do so?

I never reformat, that would be my 3rd choice of action.I would use a disc image I prepared earlier, and failing that, would do a system recovery using them discs.

BTW,when you think your all set up,run Secunia psi 2.0 beta and see what that says

im not done just yet i magnaged to isntall the epson printer drivers along with the nod32 and malwarebytes stuff, and i stil need to make sure windows downlaods 96 more updates.

also i need to add the way to boot it for a vit laptop is to press the on button and hit quickly the esc key it takes me to a boot dialog screen and i select the USB one.

finally im gonna test after this if i still ahve my linux partition if not can i make one by installing linux? one of the manuls mentioned linux will ask me to make a partition scheme
