My laptop occasionally says fan error when booting and shuts down so im going to replace it, the problem is I know nothing about laptops. I was looking for advice on replacing the fan, which one I can get, where from, how much, how to do it etc, basically everything. Its an IBM Thinkpad T42, ive tried blowing in the fan vents and it looks clear, no dust but it seems to do it at random, its quite rare that it does it but I dont want to bugger it completely.
it may or may not be possible depending on the laptop. You're just going to have to see if you can find a replacement fan on ebay and then suck it and see basically.

I wont need no special tools will I? The screws outside the laptop are just normal. I wont need no heat paste or anything?
Yes you will need thermal paste. Buy some arctic silver 5 and arcticlean thermal paste remover. You'll need to remove the existing paste from the chip(s) using the arcticlean and then replace with arctic silver 5, a thin layer covering the die of each chip. Then put the heatsink in and make sure it has good, firm contact with the die(s)
