Myst III crashes when discs are swapped?

I've got Myst III: Exile. It's for Windows 98, but worked without compatibility mode on Windows XP without any problems whatsoever. It's got 4 discs. When you start the game, you put in disc 1 and then when you select 'new game' or 'load game', both of which (usually) require you to swap discs depending on what age you're on or if you're going to the beginning of the game.

When I select new game (I have no saves right now, since I can't even get in-game), it prompts me to switch to Disc 2. The disc tray opens, as well. I put in Disc 2, and it minimizes to the desktop to show the auto-run window. So I disabled the autorun window, and it still minimizes to the desktop.

When I click on the game's icon in the task bar, the game maximizes but almost immediately crashes.

    How do I fix this?
