My laptop is not turning on sometimes...

My laptop has moments when I turn it on, I only hear the fan and and the screen is still completely black after turning it on, and have to turn it off manually [aka the power button].
The fan doesn't stop after a while unlike other cases like this.

Sometimes, if I wait a while when it's off and then turn it on again, it works normally. o_O

And yes, if you're wondering, the lights do turn on. But when it's having one of those "moments", I turn a light on the laptop, it kind of "freezes" there, so that it can't be turned off.

    Anyways. Specs, if required:

    Gateway [Model MT3423]
    32-bit Vista Home Premium SP1
    AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-56 [1.8 GHz]
    NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100
    2 gigs of RAM

Worth noting that it is a refurbished laptop, even though it worked well before this happened. Longer than the brand-spankin' new Dell I once had that died within a week due to vid card defect. =|

sounds like it could be a heat issue, whats the environment like where it is (temp/humidity?)

I live in Florida. 'Nuff said.

And yes, my laptop had an issue before by randomly turning itself off, but I fixed it myself by not putting it in the "High performance" option when not needed. So I guess this one is as easily fixable. Hopefully. =[

I just don't know how much it costs, at least the average range of prices would be helpful to know.

I've seen them at wal-mart for around 20.00 but i've heard they are not that great, but its a start till you can find something better.

Yea I have a similar issue like you....My laptop last night actually turned off on it's own....This is usually a heat issue.....The top of the laptop could seem less hot, but the actual motherboard is too hot and shuts itself off as a precaution. It's the same thing with your laptop turning "on".....might be a fan issue as well...Try to lower your power options unless you are playing a game of course and need the high performance, but this way your laptop won't be so temperamental. Laptops are too fragile for my taste, I actually have to buy a new battery, it's completely dead, it says (0%) on it. lol So I now constantly have to leave it plugged in. Also make sure your HDD isn't overloaded with junk, and free up as much ram as possible since you have a 2gb running Vista (which is the lowest ram that is suited for Vista)

That's what I do. Lowering the power options and not over-loading my HDD. I use CCleaner at least 2 times a month.
Yeah, I don't know if it's due to my laptop being an old model [around 2006, iirc], but the battery drains FAST even while on the lowest power setting. =|

the battery that comes with some laptops are not all that great guess thats why they try to get you to spend 100+ bucks for a new one even more if you want a 9 a cell. My battery gave out on my old laptop so I just left it plugged in since I didn't move it around.

I can tolerate the battery draining, though.
But not the "Turning the lappy on and off at least 2~3 times a day in order for it to work properly." =|
