Ok say as you may or may not know, all australian year 9 students recieved there own laptops as part of the DER (digital education revolution) campaign. All laptops are free and the students are allowed to keep them provided they finish year 12. Year 9 students of 2009 from all around Australia recieved them, making us the first students to test out this new program. Our schools model (don't know if different schools get different models) is the Lenovo S10e. Since they are bought in extreme bulk, they are really cheap (between $200 and $400) but the software (if you buy it like a sucker) is worth around $4000. Instead of photoshop CS4 we get photoshop elements... They are meant to not be able to run exe files etc etc etc. This is to ensure students don't abuse there laptops to play games. It should be a good solution but unfortunately upon right clicking the application, using the option "run as administrator" allows anyone to use those programs. Sure it's nice to play peggle nights or CS CZ on our laptops but i'm seriously dissapointed at this fail attempt to stop us playing games... When I informed a few of my teachers that we were able to play games on our laptops, they were absolutely dumbfounded. Anyway moving on i have some pictures i took of my laptop. I have a few comic books and some manga on my laptop. So far the funniest thing to happen with our laptops was a cracked version of GTA vice city, in it there was a folder called anim. The person who began to circulate it around the school put a movie clip in there called boxing match. People curious as to what type of boxing match this was watched the video and much to their (and my) surprise it was a hardcore porno. We then asked people around the school if they wanted to watch an intense boxing max. We photographed their reactions and compiled them into a video. very funny stuff. Anyway if anyone else has a different model of laptop i'de love to see it.

My government supplied laptop. its a 1.7Ghz centrino with 1GB of ram (since upgraded to 2GB), 100GB hard disk (since upgraded to 160GB, been replaced twice because of heat damage) intel 802.11b/g wifi (since upgraded to 802.11a/b/g) and 256MB dedicated vram (video chip is an ATi x700, and it sucks). It has a 17" widescreen display and a full keyboard (including dedicated numpad), and 2.1 sound with onboard subwoofer. Of course this wasn't what they initially gave me, but I sent that back and said I wanted a real laptop ;D

Do these Governments give you any old crap to keep the costs down.Ive never heard of that brand the original poster has and Acer are not good.
I quite liked the Toshiba satellite pro range, but I thought big corporations etc bought Dell..

Lenovo are the company that make IBM thinkpads.

my laptop cost a good £1,700. I was given a choice of brands and told to choose any of their laptops (it had to be one of the named brands, and it had to have an intel processor for some reason, they refused to let me have an AMD). that was the best laptop I could find within the criteria I was given, I would have had a Sony (the one they originally gave me was Sony) but their entire line up was complete crap at the time.

Thats a good budget they gave you,I thought they only gave you £500.Is that laptop/budget you had from 10 years ago.
I once owned a Sony toughbook-cost £3000 and that was crap, but that was 15 years ago.

ive had it 4 years now, got it in november 2005. my two complaints about the Sony they gave me was the intel integrated graphics dragged the performance through the floor, and the battery life was only 45 minutes.

Loony, what would you go for now with that sort of budget,in case any students are wondering...

for a small portable laptop for taking notes etc (which is what I was supposed to have), I'd get a Sony Vaio Z series or X series (the Z series can have a geforce graphics chip, the X is stuck with intel). I got my aspire for playing games (which I wasn't allowed to do) and it didnt work out very well, so if a student wants a laptop for games, get a desktop instead.

US Government giving us laptops??? lol, never happen. Our nations school programs are horrible. I remember in 7th grade and i would ask questions about stuff in the book, and i got kicked out of class for asking stuff the the teacher didn't even know.
