Recently my friend discovered that the iPod Google Maps app tracks your position without being in range of known wi-fi or (obviously) 3G. Try it out for yourself. Find your current location with your wi-fi on. Then when you have that little blue dot, start walking around your neighbourhood. You will get out of range of your wi-fi but mysteriously the blue dot will continue to update your position every once in a while. Approx. 5 mins intervals. We both tried it. My friend has an ipod touch 3rd generation and I have an ipod touch late-model 2nd generation. Any thoughts? ANDREW AND PETER
Ghosts I presume? XD but it mite be the signal leek...a bit of it remains but doesn't take much to dissapear...kinda like a scent..
The iPod Touch use triangulation to find your coordinates. This relies on surrounding cell towers, not your wifi connection.
yes...it happens...It can last for an hour or more Post Merge: [time]1269836239[/time] I was about to say that too XD
The position is updated based on nearby Wi-Fi networks. It will calculate and plot your position on the map without an Internet connection, but it won't be able to actually download map images. Therefore, the map will be blurry if it's a location that you haven't zoomed in on in the past.
Interesting theories boys/girls. I had speculated it might have to do with nearby networks but never really knew.Or maybe it's Apple tracking us to steal our wives
