In three weeks my final year of Graduate studies will begin & to be honest I feel both excited & at the same time nervous. I'm happy & excited because finally my hard work will pay off :) I'm nervous because I'm still waiting for my application to work as a full time staff employee at my University department gets approved, otherwise I don't know if I can get a good job elsewhere. It's not my credentials I'm worried though, it's my "special needs" that troubles me. I know the whole applying for a job routine & I know that because of one thing I can't do is the major reason why I couldn't get a job outside my University where people know who I am & what limitations I have.

That one thing is achieving eye contact with people I talk to, being visually impared at birth, I can not make eye contact with people because I really can't see that well to begin with. And as the "routine" job application process tells us, "not making eye contact with the human resource correspondent (the job interviewer) is a sign either the person applying for a job position is either not confident with his or herself or is not really serious in applying for the job.

I really hate this policy since as I said I can't make eye contact with people & being in a corrupt, backward country isn't helping as well. We don't have "equal" opportunity laws/policies for people with specific needs, & the few laws we do have are only for those who are on wheelchairs & those too are often neglected by the general public. Like taking a ride on public transport for example, people on wheelchairs are given special aid by the law from the driver of said public vehicle to be given assistance in getting on & off a vehicle, but often times a person on a wheelchair flagging down public transport gets ignored & is passed by by scrupolous heartless drivers.

And even that bastard Bayani Fernando who is the head of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) who even has the gall to run for president next year BLATANTLY stated on a Documentary program that explored the hardships of wheelchair bound people said on national television, that "Special needs individuals should just stay home WHERE THEY ARE SAFE & ARE NOT A BURDEN to us regular people: WHAT THE EFFIN' HELL!?

The guy is a big bastard if you ask me & he plans to run for a higher public office position :(

Anyway, that's not why I posted this actually, I just wanted you guys to know that this coming academic year will be the hardest one I will be having & what happens when or IF I graduate is still a bit murky. But I'm hoping I can make it through.

Ah, congratulations. Perhaps a note on your eye impairment at the beginning may help?

Good luck Cahos, I hope your studies and the University postition works out for you. Of course with your education maybe you could consider working abroad, perhaps somewhere that has good equal opportunities legislation in place? Even if now is not the time for you to consider a move your education will always offer you an exit option for the future. I hope it all works out for you no matter what you choose, and that Bayani Fernando falls down a hole.

    Thanks guys :)

I just submitted an application to work at The National Library of the Philippines as one of the professors at our department notified me that they know some people there, that is they can inform the people at Human Resources that I have special needs & hopefully can get by the eye contact issue.

My College Degree was B.S. Ed. Majoring in Filipino & Minored English, during this time I got very fascinated with the subjects concerned with Linguistics, especially the study of our country's major languages. When I took up a Masters Degree, instead of following up on Education I took up Linguistics. My degree is M.A. in Filipino.
