??? im having a problem with my black xbox 360 elite. i keep getting the red ring of death on my elite. i dont even play it. i can turn it on. and it will run perfectly fine. and if i turn it off 5 sec later then turn it back on 5 sec later, i get the 3 red rinds of death. i know for sure thats it not over heating. cuz its not even on for a min. i have to let it sit for about 20-30 min in order for the red lights to go away. but if i turn it off shortly after turning it on, the red rings will appear again. i tried all the trouble shoots available online. and i dont want to send it to microsoft just yet. if any one knows what the problem is i would gladly appreciate it. any suggestions will do. sending my xbox to microsoft is my last option.
    please help.

It should be your first option.

The red ring issue is covered by an extended warranty. Use it, it is what it is there for. Anything you may try to do to it to fix it will likely end up voiding the warranty and screw you over.

Depending on the actual parts of the circle that are red (IIRC) can troubleshoot the actual issue (could be plugs etc.). How old is the Xbox? Send it in if you are worried about doing anything else.

from what you describe that is definitely a heat issue, sounds exactly like one i fixed and it was just full of dust and did exactly what your describing, once i removed the dust it worked fine.

do the fans start spin faster and louder at any point?

but if your under warranty just send it back if not open it up and if you don't want to do that sell it on ebay

Sounds like it has dry solder jonits for either the cpu or gpu on the board, by "dry joints" I mean that it was not completely soldered correctly when was made and solder joint has crack in it preventing connection. These solder joints for cpu/gpu are very small. Best to sent in to Micro$oft if you hae warranty, I have 3 xbox 360's and 2 of them I need to keep fixing.
