sounds like you are looking for a midi sequencer

audacity is the only free one I know of.

Game music you want? I suggest you get your beats from Hammerhead. It's a drum sequencer that has a ton of options. It's real simple to use, and it's free.

Well, if you want a programme with instruments, then you'll want a programme called "Sibelius"

Finale Notepad is pretty cheap, and older versions, like 2008, are free. You write the music in notation, but it can save as a MIDI file. The only problem is that the 2008 download is elusive, especially to cheap people like me who don't want to pay $10 for the software. If you're serious about making music, Finale, and I think Sibelius as well, has other programs with more features for a higher cost.

Sibelius has all sorts of instruments, it generates their sound! you can create the music for almost any instrument, and have as many instruments going at the same time

A good music editing, and creating program that has tons of loops as well as note by note composing is Acoustica Mixcraft. I have written a couple of songs with it and was duly impressed. It can be compared more to Sibelius than Audacity. Audacity is better used as a sound recorder than anything else.

    :) Happy Music Making!

thank you for all your input... now I can start making background music for my fan-based double-dragon game... I think it should be 3D, and the basis of batman: arkham asylum... now if I can only find the engine it runs on...

But seriously, if you want to use a program that isn't just for midi sequencing and classical stuff, look at FLStudio. So much stuff, and you can download and mix your own sounds i.e. different synth flavours.
