    Most useful/important invention/discovery to mankind ? Following the discovery of fire and the wheel ... The mankind continued the progress. Even today, many new things, gizmos and technology is moving forward. Science has probably influeced the world. To make this a little more informative just also stat the most unusal or not good to use inventories. You can also say the disadvantages of these inventions and discoveries.

    lol mould. Which of course is penicillin, the reasons are obvious, without it many of us would not be here today (though with mass over population I guess it turns out this was actually a bad discovery :p)

    I have a problem with my tonsils.. I have been injected 10 times with pencillin in 10 consecutive days.

    Basing my choice on the "Civilization" games, I think it's "Writing systems", because once your Civilization learns writing, a lot of other discoveries are unlocked for you ;D
