Okay, my mom says that if you have a webcam directly connected to your computer, hackers can see you use it. Well no duh, for video chat and stuff, but for recording videos, just for fun? REALLY? I just want to prove her wrong.

    Story:
My bro and I were screwing around with some webcam software, and made two stupid videos with it, just to screw around. My mom noticed us, pushed me outta the way, and put electrical tape over the webcam, and told us to never use it.

    Stupid right?

Your mom watches too many movies.

Webcams could be used to watch you, if it's hooked to your computer, your computer is turned on, and you are infected with a virus that allows a hacker to control your computer.

If she's that worried about it, just disconnect the camera when it's not being used. And make sure you keep a good antivirus program on your computer.

She read what you said, said she barely watches many movies (but she watches the news and misinterprets it), I can't disconnect the camera, and my mom says, she doesn't see the reason for it. Told her we were just goofing off, and we were not even going to post anything on YouTube, she yelled at me, saying she doesn't want our faces on the net, and I got pissed off even more. I have two antivirus softwares, avast! and MSSE.

    Over protective mother, that's normal.

Unlike me (my laptop has abuilt in web cam-but I only know it's on when the stupid thing lights up-the blue light BURNS!) yours would be (I assume) usb based, have it at the front port and just pull it out from time to time, if she doesn't like that, then too bad...you got the cam and that's how you plan on using it.

I'd talk to your mother for you, but your too far away...you have a clue what your doing, and besides she can't watch you forever.

Try this (what I said to my mother)

"Anything I do a hacker can expoilt, from simple things like chatting to more dangerous things like as you might do like pay bills and check statments, if you don't want to be hacked, get rid of the internet...your phone line, all the mobiles and go live without technology, anything that broadcast a signal can be hacked, why if someone get's bored they can screw with the tv remote"

My mother gave up after that-heck now I hack her (...not really...but she can't tell the differance between "hacking" and "stealing her internet even though I pay for my own seperatly) and taught my younger brother how to have a little fun by installing games on her admin account on her pc :p

She can't protect you forever, your details are on the net, the moment someone see's your ip adress other's than those you trust like the staff here your dead meat online, you understand, she obviously doesn't...thus the overprotective nature.

Your mother's right. Extensive research from the World Health Organisation, the United Nations, cybercrime departments of various world intelligence agencies and the Pope have all found that owners (not users, owners) of webcams are eight times more likely to be victims of fraud, home invasion or sexual harassment than Al Gore.

    Don't say you weren't warned.

Hrm, well my rather violent temperment kinda influenced her...

    I have a few questions...

    1.Is this pc shared?

2.Did you buy any of it?

3.Do you have a room with a lock?

I solved mine with a laptop...a locked room and just a little naggint for freedom, hence how I got my laptop and got my motherto stop whinging about how much I used hers...but unlike me your mother won't buy you one to shut you up, thus I'd advise a job...prehaps you can get a proper gaming rig cheaper than my laptop :)

    Mikeac,

Here's a simple solution that I'm certain your mom could agree to, unless she is dense which unfortunately as we had discussions about her before, she likely is.

Get a separate computer just for the webcam, and have that computer become completely isolated from the internet or network. No internet and network connections allowed PERIOD. You can safely go nuts on the webcam, and your mom should not have to worry about your face appearing on the internet, as all data (if any) is stored on that PC only that is not connected to the internet.

    Problem solved.

Hypr, my mom is still insane. I do have a computer with a webcam, BUT SHE TOOK THE FRIGGIN WEBCAM OFF. I had no insternet on that coomputer either! @Hypnos, the PC is shared, I chipped in 50 dollars, AND my room has no lock.

Hrm...guess she assumed you'd find a way to get the content online.

If you were older I'd grab the thing off her, lso...if you paid for it and she took it off you then I'd advise next time do as I taught my 13 yr brother one day when he made me mad.

    "Hide your crap better"

I took his dslite and locked it that day :p

Keyword most. My netbook doesn't. If someone is paranoid over their safety, then just tell them to get a webcam that lights up when it's in use.

THis is getting off topic...and because mike's mother is dead set agains't the cam even if offline, we can't help any further.

Let this thread die unless someone has a realistic response after reading above.
