    Hello...never thought I'd ask this.

Ok we (by we I mean my mother) have a speed stream router, using adsl based internet (max speed is 400kbs it seems :) ).

Recently...it's had a fair share of problems...ongoing for several years.

Because I lack account access and since mum doesn't consider it an important job, we've broken the on off switch (the first set of issues meant as advice from our isp, we had to start turning it of when not in use...constantly in my case) and before It had trouble turning on.

Now you have to hold the button to shut it off :p

However that isn't the issue...it's the fact no internet is coming thru at all, I'm guessing something else internal is damaged.

When the internet is DEAD the activity light flashes even if not in use (I removed all pc connections and disconnected to wireless router-which is fine) or the DSL light will blink 3 times...stop for 3 seconds...and blink again.

And my ps3 and laptop get DNS errors-direct line to the modem rather than the router gives same results.

Shall I assume it's the modem-and what can you advise to a guy that is used to bashing the machine and ripping cords out constantly (I got it working last time...now it's doing nothing except have those lights show :( ).

I have a speedstream as well, first things first, don't turn it off when not in use, that means it constantly has to retrain and could contribute to your low speeds (ADSL is rate adaptive, if the modem keeps disappearing the DSLAM will reduce the speed in an attempt to stabilise the line).

secondly, log into the gui and perform a factory reset (under advanced).

dsl light blinking (green), means its syncing, red means theres no signal on the line, if its having trouble syncing then try changing the cable and microfilter. Speedstreams are hardy beasts so I'd be surprised if its the modem at fault.

What mode is it operating in?

    Um...now I got new questions...

If I do the factory reset, does that mean a new ip adress is required-because it was annoying to set last time :(

Second, how do I get into the gui menu-this device was set up by an isp tech man, and did't leave us any info...

One time I got what I thought was the gui, with some ip adress that was mostly "10" but I can't get into it most times...

Micro filter-what on earth is that :(

    Mode... ???

...but the on/off part I understand clearly, I told my mother not to do it...stupid isp tech help wasn't much damn help, after all the on/off switch is stuffed.

The machine started working fine for now, but I will need to do something again if it happens, it seems to be an occasional error...

it means you'll have to set the modem up again from scratch, i.e entering all your connection details into it.

open command prompt, type 'ipconfig /all' without the quotes, the gateway address is the modem IP, entering this into a browser should bring up the gui.

the microfilter is a little box that goes between the modem/phone and the phone jack, you should have one on every phone in the house.

Mode is either router, bridge, or half bridge. Telling me the 'ppp location' and 'public IP for LAN devices' settings will allow me to work out which it is.

    which model speedstream is it?

    Ah, thanks loonylion :)

    It's a 4200 model.

But I just had a majour thought...I realised it's gonna be pointless.

Because of the switch, and the fact we normally don't get the net speeds we wanted we are planning on changing isp's, and we are gonna scrap this one when that happens.

Plus the fact is I'm planning to move out at some point so I'll have my own to worry about, thus I'll bookmark this topic and save it for future refferance.

For now just flicking it on and off keeps me running-and when my mother comes back I won't be able to enjoy it anyway (she barred me from it since she thought I'd blow 20gb in 2 days somehow...XD)
