I'm using the prepatched english ap version from a different topic. I'm playing as a warrior, and I'm stuck in the prologue. I just beat the blue ribbon pig, and I'm learning about the skillbook. However, whenever I try to use the skill (which came set as L), no matter where I was, I did absolutely nothing at all. I try killing the mushrooms, but then I hafta start the skills tutorial again. I was fiddling around with it, and I found out that the l button was just being stubborn. And as sort of an aside, for those who are using the above card and firmware, DO NOT OPEN THE HINTS BOOK!!!!!!! It freezes every time, at least for me.
