this may be old news but i only just found out i could do this today :)
if anyone else wants their xp to look like windows 7 i found an all in 1 installer that updates everything here http://www.thoosje.com/transformation-packs/Seven-remix-transformation-pack-for-XP.html

and for the sidebar here http://www.thoosje.com/windows-7-sidebar-for-xp-and-vista.html

both of these are installed in less than 5 mins and run perfectly so far

I think this isn't worthy of install, the only reason I found 7 better than XP is the graphics (I believe XP can't reach the quality of 7) and the Direct X 11.
All the other things that 7 got...
    Aren't necessary (In my opinion)

    Still...
    Good contribution :p

OR just INSTALL WINDOWS 7. Better off than emulating the graphics and eye candy on top of XP. Google "Tiny Windows 7" - Win 7 compressed and stripped to a 1 CD automatic install.

does this keep everything xp has?
does it keep xp's compatability for games?
will it work? my mate installed windows 7 but the key was wrong and had to reinstall xp then download every update again

No, currently it's difficult to "upgrade" all settings from XP to win 7. You have to start over with the Tiny Windows 7 one. This works without entering keys, all you have to do is use RemoveWAT or a similar program to remove activation altogether.

so what if i partition my drive into 2 and have tiny 7 on 1 half and xp on the other?
surely this cant be as straight forward as it sounds or wouldnt everyone do it?
btw, i keep all my files on an external drive, only my os is on the internal drive

It IS as straightforward as it sounds. ^_^ .
For me, I guess. I divided my disk into 2 partitions as you assumed, XP on one, Tiny7 on the other. Since the Win 7 is installed AFTER XP therefore the Win 7 bootloader takes over the XP bootloader, so you can select both OS at startup. Just MAKE SURE you select an empty partition for the Tiny 7 install. I have it installed on less than 10 GB of space (for the OS).

here is the link : http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5147700/Windows_7_Tiny_Unattended_activated_(2009x86)

NOTE: as I said before, it has some stuff removed, so if you think you need a certain function of windows check in the description if it's been stripped off or not
