Macbook, Dell or HP?

I'm currently a senior in high school, meaning I'll only have 5 more months until graduation.

I know it's a bit early, but I'm having trouble deciding which laptops to buy. From the reviews, it seems that Macs may seem expensive at first, but the hardware that Apple uses are "state-of-the-art" compared to the hardware used by Dell and HP. This would mean that Macs are more durable than Dell or HP laptops.
Also, the battery life of Macbooks seem to last longest (I believe it was 7-8 hours per charge).

There's also the 'macs have less virus' reason that tempts me to pick a macbook.

What are your thoughts? Do you own a macbook? Do you recommend I get it for college?

macs are even more overpriced than dells and are mostly useless. I personally would get a Sony.

    Ahh, I see.

But come early summer and Apple will throw in their educational offer: Buy a Mac and get a free Ipod Touch.

So a macbook is $999, but with the ed. discount, it's $899.
Also, with the 8GB Ipod Touch, which is $199.

Seems like a good deal, no?

    I wouldn't get a mac at all.

Like loony said, it's overpriced and pretty much useless...

I prefer netbooks personally (more portable)...but my friend has a Dell laptop and he's said nothing bad about it.

But if you get the Dell, you can just install Mac on it anyways. :)

Errm, I really don't want to settle for Dell. My brother has one and he's always nagging about how shitty it is.
Also, you can install OSX on a Dell computer?

Yep. You can install Mac OSX on just about anything really as long as it meets the minimum system requirements and has compatible hardware (Dell uses a lot of the same hardware, if not the same then similar to). The Dell Mini v10 is VERY compatible with Mac OSX SnowLeopard from what I have read, but that's a netbook. :p

Not too sure about the quality, but you can always install whatever you want on the laptop. ie - Tiny 7, Linux, Mac...etc.

i have a mac from my school and i hate it theres nothing to do!! you cant install cd's for your phone or something unless you have a program like crossover to convert windows files to play them on your mac but that stuffs up alot and doesnt work with most things. if you play games theres not much free ones for mac only like halo demo (crap) and plants vs zombies (good). but it does have its up sides like spaces which allows you to have like tabs but on the desktop rather than your browser and it is kinda easier to use. but if i had a choice i wouldn't get a mac mainly cause i like games.

Well, I'm not gonna be playing games when I'm in college.
What do you say about things like videos, music, internet surfing, viruses, etc?

Forget getting a Mac!!!! Your better of with a HP or a Sony. But i don't like HPs mousepad because it feels too plasticky and stuff. My mom got a sony vaio in march 2009. It was a big 18.4 inch screen laptop! She needs it because she teAches kids. So she needs it. I sometimes use it but the last time i used it was in december. We don't have a wireless router yet but who said I cant use the neighbours? LOL! There is like 3 not-
secured networks that i can use!!!

    Honestly...
I hate saying this, but if you want simplicity, get a MacBook Pro, with a decent sized screen.

They are easy to use, and perfect for college...editing documents, pictures, music.

Get a Mac, they are more durable and more stylish. Plus, they have great resell value. As for compatibility... Who said you couldn't install windows or Linux on it? With Bootcamp, you can run windows software, apps, games and whatnot from your Mac. Add to that great screen, superb touch pad, ultra thinness(1 inch if I remember correctly), light aluminum unibody, power and 7-8 hours of battery life, and you got yourself a college-ready, strudy-friendly and long-lasting laptop. Best choice if you ask me.

I've recently been loking at laptop and the ones which struck me where Sony and Samsung(Mainly due to its looks!).

I have a HP which is about 2 years old and has lasted well.

Mac hardware is far from "state of the art". You could get the same exact specs in a Windows based machine for half the price, not to mention that SnowLeopard is more vulnerable than Vista.
Dells can be pretty nice, if you find the right one. As for HP's, they're worse than Acer now. I've had 3 and they all blew up within a year, friends with HP laptops having the same exact issues as well.
Personally, I would go with either an Asus or a Sony.
