Lost in Translation

This is more of an exercise at learning, than a game

The point is we teach & learn what certain words &/or phrases are in another language, hopefully one you speak fluent on:

For starters:

English to Tagalog translations:

Good morning -> Magandang Umaga

Friend -> formal: kaibigan , in-formal: kabarkada, igan, pare (for guys) mare (for girls)

Enemy -> kaaway or kagalit

Good Evening -> Magandang Gabi

How are you? -> kumusta ka ba? or simply, kumusta

I am xx or My name is xx -> formal: Ang pangalan ko ay xx, in-formal: Ako nga pala si xx

Noob/newbie -> tanga (literally a fool, idiot or dullard but also used to refer to someone new to something or is unfamiliar with something)

It's only a joke, just kidding or just fooling with you -> Joke lang (now you know what this means as kamage uses this one a lot ;D)

Good bye -> formal: paalam, in-formal: ba bye! , babayu!, sige ha!

Let's go to... -> punta tayo sa...

let's go (to tell someone that we're already going) -> Tara na! , Tara lets, Tayo na

Shit -> Tae ;D

Thank you/ thanks -> Salamat or "thank you" or T.Y.

English - tagalog translations

I'm hungry - Guton na ako

Can I borrow money - Pautang......( worst words you can ever hear ) ;D

English speaking - Magaling mag Ingles ( Formal ) , Ispokening dollars ( Informal - Balbal ) ;D

Teacher - guro

Father - tatay, itay

Mother - nanay, inay

Elders - Lolo ( grandpa ), Lola ( grandma ), Thanders ( informal )

Way of respect - po - used in the end of a sentence when you are talking to someone elder than you
- opo - used to reply to an errand

Tagalog and Filipino is different
Filipino is the national language which is heavily based on the Tagalog dialect (thank you linguistics)

PS - I only spelled the words the way I heard them so don't sue me if it isn't the right spelling

 

Your "hello" is slightly wrong

Hello, on the phone -> moshi moshi?
Hello in the morning (from 4 to 10 AM) -> Ohaiyo Gozaimasu
Hello (from 10 AM to 5PM) -> Konichi wa

 

like I said some of them I only learn by watching anime with subtitles so its hard to determine these facts

Filipino has variations to tagalog in grammar and newer words, etc are considered Filipino rather than tagalog so if we're going to translate some new things, it wouldn't count as tagalog

There are only a few people left that speak pure tagalog and they would assume that they are speaking tagalog but they're not without knowing it

Filipino was based on tagalog and not exactly tagalog itself

 

A somewhat lame advice, when you go to college, take Japanese as your Language elective, unless the College/University you'll be attending require you to learn Spanish as your language elective.

Better still, take Chinese as your language elective, as these are only short 2 courses, with Chinese, you'll learn more kanji, that is if you want to play Japanese RPGs

if so what is better chinese or japanese?

 

Basic chinese

ni hao ma? -> how are you, ni hao is also counted as hello and ma is used as a question word so you'll be seeing it a lot as I write along here
ni jiao shen me ming zi? -> what's your name (the pin yin for the last is wrong i think since I'm rusty)
nin gui xing? -> what's your honorable last name (chinese people love their clan so there)

things you'll eat or drink
ka fei -> coffee
niu rou mian -> beef noodles niu rou is beef and mian is noodles
zhu rou mian -> pork noodles
pi jiu -> beer
jiu -> wine

and finally the cheesy
wo ai ni -> i love you

blah blah

just ask me if you want to know a word, phrase or sentence I'll translate it for you

Jap would be cool since you wouldn't need subtitles for watching animes or you could play imports
Chinese is more pratical because you could use it more in the future
