when I start my PC, it starts loading like normal (compaq logo, windows load screen), but then when it comes time for the login screen to come up, it just stays black, and I have to restart it by holding down the power button... it started doing this when I cleaned some clumps of dust off the heatsinks on the processor... any info on why this is happening would be sweet.
no, he cant have damaged the processor by cleaning the heatsink. is the cpu fan still working and air moving around and through the heatsink?
hmmm.... i have the same problem but instead of going to the black stage, it goes to the blue stage with all the different codes and stuff, and it just restart by itself or it just hangs on the blue stage where you need to force off or force restart the computer. hmmm...bad ram? memtest thing?
BSOD I imagine. If its a blue error screen, I need to know the line thats written in capitals, and any driver file thats mentioned.
oh, sorry for not understanding that. the blue stage is where the blue screen with the error like loony said, while the black stage is when the computer in on but the screen is just black, and no, the monitor is not broken.
Sounds like something that happened to me once, had to format and reinstall windows to fix it, or at least that's what the guy said when he fixed it.
