That same local station here (TV5) who are airing those Chinese Cartoons also had three other "gimmick" shows that sound amusing but I find really annoying & degrading. I know that according to our country's constitution, Filipino is to be our national (primary) language with English as a secondary, as English is used as a Global language, hence is also necessary to be taught to, learned & understood by the masses. But in the last two decades, we have experienced a steady decline of "foreign" English shows (American mostly). I'm citing this as I believe, & have been a part of the earlier generation who was very much immersed in English shows, that aside from the School environment, the home should play an integral part in the learning process. But if the family isn't a good source for immersion in the language, where else, than in media (TV, music & on the internet) can non native English speakers be exposed & immersed in the language outside school? Yes, patriotism should come first, but in an ever shrinking Global community, the language barriers must be broken. Because of the lack of media that immerses one to English, the quality of the average Filipino's profficiency has declined in the past years, the ones who can afford better media tend to be the more excellent ones, whilst the misfortunate don't get past Carabao English or Filipino butchered English. The lack of English shows was the beginning, the straw that is currently breaking the Camel's back are English shows being dubbed in Filipino! I'm not sure if other non native English speaking countries are doing the same, except for maybe Japan. Yes it's kinda hilarious to watch Spongebob Squarepants, Jimmy Neutron & Avatar in Filipino but it's helping in dumbing down the next generation
its the same if not worst in malaysia.... they have the whole Disney and Nickelodeon Channel in our local language. Not to mention they show the book 4 of avatar in our local languge now which kill my intrest in it. man how i wish they sell Avatar DVD in malaysia.... I really hate english cartoon in local languge because like americanize anime, they kill the character. i love the cartoon in thier original language. not to mention they have the dialoge translation all wrong.... from example. Spongebob said "Mr. Crab is cheap". which mean Mr.Carb is stingy in english but they translate in "Mr. Crab murah" which mean Mr. Carb is low price. the correct translation should be "Mr. Crab kedekut" which mean Mr. Crab is stingy. If i were the editor, i would fire that traslator long time ago.
Wait Avatar book 4? There is a book 4!? Anyway, here the translators did an adequate translation, if there was a suitable Filipino word they use it, if not they used the English word itself. What I don't like is they toned down the language. As an example, in the episode where Patrick & Spongebob were asked by Mr. Krabs to paint his house, instead of him (Mr. Krabs) warning them (Patrick & Spongebob) that he'll cut off their butts & mount them on his fireplace, he said he'll take their pants instead, now where's the threat in that? And apparently it now has gone worse, they're now even airing Blues Clues in Filipino, eeewww!!
isnt fire is book 4? or is that book 3? anyway, they are showing the fire chapter now..... and you think Blues Clues in Filipino is bad, try Blues Clues is malay.... "Hi, saya Steve, ada nampak anjing saya blue?" "Di sana!" i share your pain......
they even alter the 'audience interactive' shows? same here, in Indonesia, they air Dora the Explorer in Indonesian. it really mess up the songs
Oh the Fire chapter, that's book 3 I think. Atleast our Filipino Spongebob's voice does sound like the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLKeVUTBm5U Eeeww David Hasselhof's voice sucks If you could find a Youtube video of any cartoons translated & voiced over your language please do post the links on your posts so we can laugh at them together ^_^
yup, they alter everything.... Dora originally speak english and spanish, but now she speak malay and ver poor english. and the worse is, they left the song undub....which really mess up the whole show, i rather they dub the song as well... it would be less painfull..... well atleast your Spongebob doesnt have that high pitch anoying voice like the malay version.....
Yipee! Congratulate me you two, I just found out that we now also Have Dora the explorer in Filipino She now speaks filipino & teaches english, Woop dee doo And just like with yours they left the ugh, songs in English Very wonderful, & yeah this post has gone Spam-y with my use of
I think they know because in order for local TV stations (or local cable stations) to have the rights to air some show they import they pay for the rights to have said shows aired, along with this arrangement are the stipulations or methods by which the local stations will air the shows, this includes editing scenes that maybe inappropriate or the localization process itself.
While i don't personally have the problem of cartoons being translated, i'm tired to shit of the BBC's laziness in child's programming. They create lots of stuff for their under 5 channel CBeeBies but until quite recently, they were just importing cartoons and such from Australia and european nations. The cartoons are native english so no funny poor dubs. It's quite irritating on the problem of context as well with TV shows; for example, american shows may mention or reference something in the news/public eye then by the time it gets over to other countries (UK for example), it's completely out of context and sense so noone really gets the line at all minus certain people.
