My brother has totally stuffed up our computer. When he tried to open a shortcut, it didn't associate a program with it. (Windows 7) So, he selected Window Explorer as the default program. So, now, none of the shortcuts work. Is there a way to reverse his changes? On top of this, every time we start up the computer normally, hundreds of Windows Explorer processes pop up due the computer probably trying to load shortcuts. Please help! I don't have admin rights, nor does my little brother. My parents are away, and they are strict about giving their passwords away.
Re: .inc files I'm so pissed off at him. I am going to try a system restore (the computer made one a few days ago during an update), but does that edit registry files? And... I need admin rights for that.
Re: .inc files It's pathetic. And all he wanted to do was play BF3 and he messes up the entire computer. I wish Loony was online. He is awesome when it comes to these things.
Re: .inc files That he is..blunt at times with his opinions, but good nonetheless. And how did your bro manage to switch the default program used to open shortcuts if he wanted to play BF3?? All he would have had to do is go to the web browser and log into battelog. x_X
Re: .inc files True. But what he says works out, even if it is a little blunt. He tried to load Battlefield 3 via the start menu. It said the file '.lnk' didn't have a file association. So he says the default program is Windows Explorer and changes it to that. Now my other brother wants to play MW3 and he can't because it lags to much. Safe mode is the only alternative now and I really hate it. Pirated...
he's really screwed it up. You need to either use system restore or reinstall are most likely the safest options. .LNK is a built in windows filetype used for shortcuts, it has no default association. If you don't mind trying to edit the registry, either http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172053 or http://superuser.com/questions/92869/how-to-reset-shortcuts-lnk-file-in-windows-7 may help. Chances are you can't edit the registry without admin rights.
Ah. Thanks Loony. I reset the Windows Administrator password and made a system restore. Luckily, I made a restore point yesterday so no lost programs! And yeah, my bro screwed it up big time.
Of course. I now made my account admin, and blocked his for tomorrow Oh... if something like this happens again I'll kill him.
