Legacy of y`s book one for ds

Hi,
Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.I recently just started the game and got the small sword.But how do i equip it?It looks like its already equiped.its beside where it says sword but when i exit the town to fight i get killed instantly,as there is no sword in my hand.Can anyone help me out here.thanks. :-\

 

I think you go over to it in the inventory then press i think A to equip it
