This question has been bugging me

how is it possible that a character can still die, according to the plot, even though in the character's world there is potions, healing magic, revival magic (Raise or revive spells), and phoenix downs (and what not). Can't you just revive the person back from the dead or heal them with magic? How can die they from sickness and battle wounds if there is a healer there? (provided that the healer can deal with the person's wounds)

What's governs the characters life or death in final fantasy? ???

(if there has been a post like this I didn't find it)

When your characters die in combat, they aren't really "dead" they are knocked out.

The story governs the death. Like in FF7 with Nanaki's father, he was turned to stone by poison darts. They could have used Soft to heal him. But that would not work well with the story.

Just like in Pokemon, Characters in most RPGs only get knocked out & don't die unless the story tells that they do die. Like with Tellah from Final Fantasy 4, he dies because his old body can't cope with the tremendous strain casting Meteo has to a person.

Not just final fantasy but any game for that matter. Im pretty sure it actually follows the real laws of life I mean if you watch advent children you will notice that when fighting, the characters usually never get slashed by a sword unless it is part of the plot to die. In the case of your game however, it wouldn't be very fun if your character dies with just one hit now would it?

It's a video game. It doesn't have to be realistic or reflective of real life.

True but in the game CG, you cant really have a character hacking another character like hell and still have that character walking out alive in the next scene unless you make it logical. If a game is too far-fetch people will get confused and eventually start hating the game as it makes no sense. Imagine a scene where by Cloud slashes Sephiroth in the neck and he survives without a scrath, you're probably going to be scratching your head and saying this is bullshit.

Oh so that's why no one in Advent Children has scars or get visible wounds (minus some parts), I just thought they made it too unrealistic.

It is in a way, its realistic in the sense that like in real life a single blow with a sword can cut down your opponent. However unlike real life, no one can do triple, quadriple what ever sommersaults with a sword the size and weight of the buster sword. Nor can anyone in real life wield a katana that long with such dexterity with only one hand. Like I said in order to entertain the audience, they must make unrealistic to a certain extent but not go so far as to make it completely seem like nonsense.

they could have added wounds and scars, but it would have made the animation considerably more complex than it was (and it was already damn complex)

And people dont like seeing their favourite characters covered in scars. With the exception of Squall. But yes they could with reason. Cg/ moies are meant to tell the story line while the gameplay is just a challenge on the path to reach a point in the story. If a character is not meant to die then you will not see him get hit by a fatal blow in the story which means he is just that good. However us humans are not 'that good' therefore game designers allow us to get whacked multiple times and even heal ourselves during the gameplay

I guess there another reason, too.
A movie with too much bloody scenes would get a quiet high rating, which means people under a certain age wouldn't be allowed to watch it.

So they would cut their own profit in two ways:

    1. making more complex models and raise their costs
    2. selling less, because of brutal scenes, which were created using that models

Doesn't every character have at least a little vit of magic inside them; couldn't that protect them?
Though it's just a game; if you want it to be realistic have a game that once you die the whole game is useless

There are a few games like that, mostly RTS or turn-based strategy games like Fire Emblem for example.

I would like to see someone playing a game like Call of Duty but a REALLY realistic one that once the game character dies then the whole disc just deletes all of it's data and then it's completely blank

counterstrike is supposedly semi realistic because if you die you can't play again that round.

Honestly, would you like playing a game whereby if you die your save file gets deleted? Hell why not if you die the whole disc becomes useless to make it more "realistic". Come on that's just stupid no one is going to want to waste their money on something like that

There are several other reasons it's realistic (though some things are unrealistic simply to provide a better gaming experience, like specifics of certain gun models, such as accuracy, power, etc). It also happens to be the best online FPS ever. So yeah.

That's why realistic is not necessarily a good thing

That kind of realistic is over-realistic. When people say a game is realistic for instance COD/ Ghost Recon whereby you can take only a few hits before you die, that is still realistic to an acceptable point an makes the game all the more challenging.
