Laptop still works but some keys on the keyboard don't???

The tech asshole at HP sent our family back a $300 bill to replace our Motherboard, even though the whole mobo isn't dead. Only the connector between the keyboard and the motherboard is messed up. As I said in the title, the computer works perfectly fine, but these keys fail:

    qweruiopzxcv1234, Number Pad Keys 1245.

Is this fixable without replacing the entire mobo? My parents are thinking about taking it apart and removing the mobo, cleaning the part that is messed up, drip dry it for a few days, and put it back together. I kinda doubt that it would work anyways if we did that, or they would mess it up more. If there are no ways to fix it, my parents know friends that could for free or really cheap.

I would think that part of the mobo is completely and utterly fried. It would take somebody who knows how to build them to know how to fix it if at all possible.

it sounds to me more like its the keyboard thats fucked, not the motherboard...

There is one easy way to tell. Get a different keyboard that you know works and hook it in. If it has the same issue, then the port is fried.

if the port was fried NONE of the keys would work... and the keyboard wouldnt be detected at boot either.

You can't say that for sure. Maybe I shouldn't say fried, but rather, damaged. I don't know though, if this issue only happened after something happened to the motherboard, it seems odd that the issue would be the keyboard that did nothing. The title implies that the motherboard had something spilled on it, not the keyboard.

sure I can. All the keys on the keyboard use the same pins on the keyboard port, what differs is the electronic pulse sequences. No physical damage could alter/block some sequences but not others.

It just seems off to me that motherboard damage would break the keyboard.

yes, which is why im saying its keyboard damage not motherboard damage. Plus, how the hell do you spill soda on a computer motherboard? you can't unless you're being stupid with the case open.

I was wondering that myself. Why was an exposed motherboard anywhere near soda of all things? The only reason I could think of was that something new was being put into the computer, but then that still makes me wonder why an open container of liquid was anywhere near it.

That's what I thought. It's a laptop, so it's not hard to spill liquid through the keyboard into the internal components (would've been a good idea mentioning it huh?). That's why I doubted it's a motherboard issue. I didn't spill the soda by the way. I think the keyboard is fucked, but I dunno where to get a good replacement laptop keyboard. I have no idea what the laptop model # is right now, HP hasn't sent it back yet.

EDIT: Do you personally think HP was trying to rip us?

i've always had bad luck with HP. every computer i have ever gotten from them has fucked me over. i would recommend getting a mac. terrific customer support, and never crashes!

macs are a waste of space, they're just overpriced PCs with an interface designed for toddlers.

I still believe its the keyboard at fault; if you dont mind voiding your warranty you can buy a replacement keyboard on ebay and fit it yourself.

My warranty is already fucked since HP already took the damn thing apart.
Blargh, still hate Macs. Mac laptops are extremely overpriced, while the desktops are expensive.
