Hi. Ive found a HP laptop about 3 weeks ago. Ive tried finding the original owner. No luck. The people at the hotel said she was on her way back to California, and that i could keep it since it was found outside of the Hotel grounds. Is there a way that I can remove the password to get inside the computer? Thanks.

How about just wiping the disk and reinstalling the OS? It's not like you need any of the data that's on there right now.

You need to make some kind of boot disc to find or remove password. These usually come as an iso file for which you use imgburn to make a bootable disc, the popular tool is Windows Password Key.

The password reset process can be done as following:

Log in any available computer and download Windows Password Key. Install it and burn it to a blank CD or USB flash drive.

Insert the newly made disk to your locked computer, and make the computer boot from your disk, then follow the instructive to reset the password in minutes.

The best method would be on a USB

Not all computers can boot from USB, so no, the best method is a burned CD.

Maybe make a usb before burning a disc. If he doesn't have disc laying around he could make that useful

I'm still trying to look for one that works from a USB...

CD one works nice, but still need to drag around a big old CD and possibly an external CD drive (for laptops that don't have internal disc drives or have busted ones).

theres a significant difference. Breaking into a computer system without authorisation is a criminal offence that is likely to result in a jail sentence. Software piracy won't.

Rell, may I ask why do you want to access the (former) owner's personal files on the laptop you found? What purpose would those files serve for you? An opportunity for stealing that owner's information and files for your personal gain, or committing identity theft?

I'm glad that Windows Password CD didn't work for you. Because you have no business accessing the (former) owner's files in the first place. Should you even manage to gain access to those files, you will certainly land in hot water should that owner try to reclaim her laptop back.

My advice to you: STOP! Return that laptop back to the hotel before you get yourself into legal trouble.

I tried that, the clerk told me to keep it. Tried tracking the lady down on face book and everything. On another note, if i were smart enough to comit an act of identity theft, I problem wouldnt be asking guys how to crack a pass..lolol. but yea, Ive already installed a backup IOS from my original laptop so yea..thread closed i guess :D

Better to hand it into Police-rather than running Spotmau Password Genius
