Laptop or Desktop? It is so hard to choose!!!

I like a laptop because it is small, compact and I can bring it like anywhere. I can use it in the basement, in my room, even in the washroom ;D and bring them to hotel rooms during vacations.

But I dislike it because it has heating problems (some) and that for the same price I can get a PC that is better (in specifications) :-\

I like desktops because they are freaking powerful-er than laptops at the same price and can be easily upgradable or I can add stuff (such as DVD/Blu-Ray Drives and Hard Drives and more RAM into it)

But I dislike it because I can't bring it anywhere. It is stationary and I want to bring my PC to libraries with Free Wi-fi and stuff. :(

Therefore, it is really hard to choose which one to get during the Back-to-school Sale...

I feel like getting a laptop more than a PC, then it changes again and again...

If you have something to add, just comment on this.

Like loony said, I would go for a desktop unless portability is an absolute must.
Nearly double the specs and completely upgradeable for the same price? Yes, desktops are way more worth it

it really depends. if you want gaming then desktop is the way to go. if you really need a laptop for work and studying outdoors then laptop is for you. personally I need both of these so what do I do? get both! yes I have a desktop for supreme gaming and a laptop for studying outdoors or to just surf in wi-fi spots.

That. I love my desktop. Even though it is REALLY old and slow compared to today's standards, it will always be my choice since it is so reliable and I can upgrade it however I want.

Laptops/Netbooks are ok, but only for school.
I don't use mine for much, so I just put ArchBang on it so that it will always be functional and I don't have to worry about all of the shit that Windows has. :p

if you already have a laptop, then i think its time for you to get a pc/desktop.

There is no point in having 2 laptops, right? Its stupid to bring 2 at the same time, even a geek don't do that.

I vote the desktop for the better specs, cheaper, and upgradeability if it being portable isn't your #1 need.

    Desktop. For the reasons above.
I had 3 laptops before I got a desktop and I dont miss them at all, games never run as good, the battery always goes flat.
I never once used wifi spots, its too much hassle carrying it around with you everywhere.
Why go somewhere to use the internet anyway? I go out to see my friends and socialise, I use my PC to socialise on the internet when I have nowhere to go.

Honestly, it depends what you need. If you're going to be playing decent-spec games or doing some decent programming, desktop. If you're going to be using it primarily for internet and word processing, go laptop, especially if you intend to take work elsewhere. I got myself a laptop for schoolwork, and the big rig (my desktop, which I got later) is for gaming, fucking with Virtual Machines and programming.

And for the love of god, if you go desktop at least make it a good one. I'm not going to have to upgrade my box for at least two years since I spent some extra to begin with. Don't waste your money on a low-range desktop.

Well, I don't have a laptop at all. All I have is a crappy PC that is like really old. I would either buy a laptop or a desktop because my OLD PC is going to the dump, after I do a bit of smashing ;).

I am getting a new computer for high school (I think, hopefully I do get a new one) but portability is not a must. I mean, what high school allows you to bring your laptop to use? Not mine (I guess) and I am probably not going to play many games on it (I would probably pirate it to play it). And if I am getting a laptop, I would get one that can play games but is not expensive (like a high-spec one) that has like a dual-core 2GHz+ processor, 4GB of RAM, 320GB+ HDD. That is the spec of my mom's laptop (which I havn't used for A LONG TIME) that she bought in March 2009. It was a 18.4-inch laptop, yes they make those and she needed that size (she is a teacher and she shows "educational" videos on it because the school she works at doesn't let her use a TV and stuff.

Now it is slightly outdated, slightly. That laptop can play CoD6 and BattleField: Bad Company 2 at like 60 FPS or something like that. But it's for high school and if I get a laptop now, I don't need to buy one for College or University. But by then, the laptop I buy now would be "out-dated", 4-years-old. By then, laptops would have like 8GB of RAM or more (now it is 4GB on average on laptops) and Quad Cores would reach 2.5GHz+ or so on laptops. (Now it is still 1.6GHz/core in a quad-core laptop)

But I still want to surf the net on my patio (I haven't did that with my moms laptop :( )and not be stuck inside where the A/C is barley on, and bring it to places during a vacation. Who brings their entire PC and monitor to a different country? And use it whenever I go to the library, if there is Wi-Fi. Portability is now becoming more of a must...

    General advantages - desktop

    Portability - laptop

    You decide between the two.

Whatever you choose to do, don't choose the middle ground and go with a "gaming laptop". Those are horrible beasts that drink electricity and piss heat! You do not want a dedicated graphics card in your laptop.

It is really nice to have the portability of a laptop, but if you don't really need it, I'd suggest going with a desktop and then if you have the funds, get a decent netbook. In the end, buying a good desktop + a decent netbook probably won't be all that much more expensive than buying a "gaming laptop".

I'll go with Nevon with his idea, a pc with a netbook. Never the middle gaming laptop. With the price of a gaming laptop, you can have both what you need. A PC for gaming and a netbook for portablity. Also, the only difference in my opinion with a laptop and netbook is the dvd drive, so i suggest you get a portable dvd writer.

You will never need a 1TB for your laptop, right? Cause you will use that 1TB for your desktop. I can't believe those people that get a portable 1TB harddrive... its slow in read/write and it can't be installed with an OS. Also, laptops have crappy video cards unless its a gaming laptop which cost a lot.

So like Nevon said, a PC + netbook = perfect combo.

It seems to me your dilemna is based around gaming.I would forget about gaming and opt for a mid-range Laptop.

Actually you do want dedicated graphics. Integrated graphics are so shit they slow the rest of the machine down.

Does your school have computers? Im certain it will.
Just buy a few GB flash drive and you can take your work to school and back again to your awesome gaming desktop :)

Yeah, the school has these Dell PCs and IBM ThinkCentre PCs. I've been transfering my work using a USB for like 2 years because my PC does not have Internet! My dad is either too lazy or too protective put Internet on my PC...

Anyways, I still feel like bringing a laptop to StarBucks and use their Internet.

By the way, what is the point of having a fast-as-hell PC if I am not going to have internet on it?

At least with a Laptop, I can "borrow" neighbours Internet! ;)
