Okay, so I saw this fly on my powered-off Digital TV. It wasn't flying around and even when I got near it it stayed where it was, doin that crap flies do with their front legs. Anyways, it was an odd fly; It had a golden body, Zig-zags of black on its wings and a STINGER. Because it didn't move much and wasn't flying, I got him easy with a swatter, but I am still wondering, Just what IS this thing? Neither me nor pop have ever seen one before. Perhaps a yello-jacket and a fly had a good time and mated?

    Anyone know what it is?

it is most likely a deer fly, horse fly, or a yellow dung fly.....
it could be a mango fly but you hinted it was average size....
and watch out! because if its a bot fly your in for a world of hurt :'(

its a type of parasite that attaches itself under your skin.....
the fly obviously lays its eggs under your skin........
some also lay their eggs on people.....

Ugh...you people obviously don't know anything about insects do you?

It was one of those flies that looks like a bee for defense purposes most likely from the description.
And a fly and yellow jacket cannot breed.

    I hate bot flies...YUCK!!!

Well, what I felt strange is that it was neither defensive nor offensive; it was just doing the shit it was doing, even when I was fairly close to it.

I searched pics of botflies but I ddin't find any with zig-zags in their wings.

take the sting and put it in your mouth? If it has poison, it would definitely be sour >:D

The bee fly is what it was most likely. They have a "stinger" on their butt.
    It's fake though.

Wasn't a bee fly, it wasn't at all fuzzy...to me it more resembled a wasp fly...

anyways, why i think it's a fly; mainly its motions. You know flies do dat shit with their front legs, they rub 'em together, and wasps, not so much, they sorta move their body/stinger up and down when idle. So it was a fly.

some other flying insect do the hand rubbing as well I believe...
Or maybe its getting ready to attack, it is merely planning it in a macabre matter, if thats the case its a bot fly....XD

I'd think it would be more aggressive, then.

Perhaps it was a test sent by aliens to see if I would kill it, and they'd judge all of humankind based on the decision.

srsly tho, I woulda picced it but it was on my pricey TV, so didn't wanna do ANYTHING to envoke any form of anger it may have had (some insects react negatively and aggressively to flashing light)

hmm, interesting, but it defietely looked to have the body shape of a fly.

The one I saw was doing this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTVtNNfvTl0

and it had a goldish body, black zigzag stripes on its wings and a noticeably LONG stinger for its size.

The alien experiment theory becomes more and more possible...

    and as stated before:
sand bees do this as well though, but are quite jumpy, so don't think so.

Would have been a good time to had a camera on hand. I keep one handy to snap pics of any strange, and at times unwanted critters get in the house before they are dislodged or sent back to their creator.
