I don't mind screwing over my partitions, because I can just do it again on my laptop.
I've been thinking of running Linux on my laptop, but don't know where to start.
    Help please.
I'm running Windows XP service pack 2 32-bit system

You can just use the partition manager in Windows to make a partition for Linux, install Linux on the new partition, and then it will install Grub (boot menu) and you're set. :)

Not sure if my piece of shit can do that though.
I'd be safe just running one partition

    It's pretty safe. :)
I did it on an older desktop.

My laptop lags even when running DOS stuff.
    I don't think It'll work out.

If you use a low-level OS, like Mepis or ArchBang!, it should run fine.
