Im unsure about the modchip side of PS3s, though it is currently possible to run certain Linux distributions on PS3, effectively turning it into a 'PC'.

you can upgrade the hard disk and you can install linux (Sony deliberately included both those features) There are no modchips to my knowledge

There's none that exist, or which can be purchased. My brother keeps me updated. The Linux thing is allowing a few developers to develop games for it, although it's a lot harder.

I meant more on the side that can The PS3 be modded sorta like a PSP where you can Play games off of the Hard drive. =o

Sorry if I caused any confusion.

in relation to the PSP (though I doubt the PS3 would work in a similar fashion), there are currently no custom firmwares, downgrades or mod chips which will allow you to mod your PS3.

the PS3 has a very complicated security system. it's almost impossible to mod it.

Actually there is a way but it has like a 50% chance of failing, and it involves flashing the BIOS or something.
Basically that lets you downgrade the firmware and then you can run the ISO Loader. Although considering the fact that if it fails your PS3 dies permanently, I didn't attempt that.
The website I saw this on is something like ps3-hacks.com

According to some rumours and videos I saw on the web, there is a program called ISO Loader which, as the name says, loads ISOs. Basically, you install it on the PS3's HDD, put a game on the HDD then load the game with the program. It's being developed, I think, and it'd be nice if it was accomplished. However, putting those up-to-50GB games on the HDD would be very boring.

That's the method I was talking about, but it only works on firmware 1.50 or something, and to downgrade you'd need to flash the BIOS (or whatever it's called).

If that's true, then still there's no chips for it. Like we stated.

Actually I've seen two different chips for sale as well, but I don't know if anyone has tried them out.

They may have been fakes, I found one not too long ago by someone called infectus or something, but it was a dud.

Yeah probably. I don't plan on modding my PS3 anyway.

even if there was a mod chip, how would you go about copying the disc?? sure there are blu ray writers and blu ray writable cd's but with the amount of cost and time, you'd be better of just buying the game from a cheap source like gamestop, goozex or cex.

Why mod your PS3? If you are rich enough to buy one, you can buy the games!

That is necessarily true BUT, I had the chance to get a PS3 but I chose not to because, If I did I would be giving up my allowance and my birthday gift for the next year, so I wouldent be able to get any games. =/

And I was just carious if it was possible anyway. =3

So thank you for all your responses, I know now that Ill wait until next year before getting a PS3.
(Wishes that the price will drop.)

I don't think a modchip is needed for that, just like there isn't the need for a modchip for the PSP.

I guess I'd be better off copying a blu-ray (wasting around one hour and 20€) than buying the game for 70€. But I'm not sure, I still have to think [/sarcasm].

yea, even if you could, the cost of a single burnable blu-ray is more than a pack of 50 writable DVDs. and the disc only burn at 1x speed. AND the games are over 30Gb let alone the newer ones that are saposedly going to reach over 400Gb.

So by time the system is cracked the ammount of space and time needed wont really be worth it.

dual layer bluray is only 50GB. The drives also cost a lot, however write speed can now reach 4x
