Is being religious means that a particular person is morally healthy?

What I want to say here is if a person is religious, will he or she automatically reject other ideas about their life(e.g evolution) and accept the idea that they were brought up with.
More importantly, what does it mean by being religious?
Does it mean by praying to whatever omni-being everyday?(e.g my mom)
My father is not religious at all but he never say something bad about others(insulting people, talk about others behind them, etc) but my mother sometimes talk to me about the neighbour's daughter being stupid...
At the same time,my mom is very helpful to others.
    From my experience,religious or not,everyone is a two-sided coin.How about you guys?

    Re: Is being religious=creationist=morality?

Well written out, with the title being the exception. You're using a formulaic title, try to catch the browser with something less mathematical.

Is being religious any different that creationism morality wise?

There are some highly intelligent folks on these forums, so enjoy your sparring with 'em.

Well, it's a question of intelligence.
There can be nice dumb people too. So there can be nice religious people.
There can be mean smart people. So there can be mean atheists/agnostics.

@Dedboy what does it mean by the title casul gamer, hopeful, retro gamer ,etc..)

Yes, that is exactly what it means. And the title is even better written than I could have thought of.

For years religion has been taken to levels it should have never been taken to. Usually the more "religious" someone is, the less healthy morally they are. Cahos, just got back in from witnessing that first hand.

Good debate topic, well thought out, and well written. Kudos to the author.

    Hmm.

I think that the world is just cram packed with ideals and beliefs that can affect everyone. And not just religion( Though the topic is on this particular ). Can it change you as a person? Absolutely when you acknowledge a power greater than any person can control. But it's only through your understanding and learning that will decide just how it effects your morals. If you want to truly be a good person, you will be regardless of your merit in church.

That's my 2 cents. Hopefully it makes a smidge of sense.

It makes a lot more than a smidge of sense. I used to have the women at a church near me, cuss at me, while they were drinking scotch and smoking ciggs. All while standing in the church lobby. Church merit is nothing compared to personal merit.

A very brief, yet thorough response Jupiter.

I think there are different levels to being religious.

Every super religious person I've met is stubborn and prejudice. My grandma treats people who aren't from our religion as though they made nothing but poor life choices. I don't care at all and know for a fact that a lot of the things they taught me in church was made up on the spot. Contradictions every 2 or 3 visits.

Anyway I think the more religious you are the less morally healthy you become. Because you base every decision on what you're told is right. Not what you choose for yourself. If you make the right decisions for yourself without being told to do so then you are morally healthy.

But all the same this is just my opinion. Think what you want.

For being Christs righteous blood, it sure gives a wicked hangover. And trust me, cigarettes and scotch was a step up for these hypocrites. One of them had throat cancer, had the voice box device on top of that. She put the cigarette in her tracheostomy(the hole in her throat to allow breathing) and inhaled . I was only four and talk about a flashback...

Ya' know dedboy, Dennis Leary did a joke about that lol. Look up treacheotamy man, or however you spell it.

Unfortunately you're probably right cottonballs. It's easy for one to say they've met devout religious folk who were generally good spirited towards everyone, not a grudge in the world.

BUT, the ratio next to over bearing fanatics does seem one sided. Not just with christianity or catholicism, even a buddhist monk can think he knows everything in the world( Yup, cap'n obvious. ) Atleast they get a few lifetimes to study.

Religion molds a person's being. That's it's prime purpose, at least according to mine. I'm catholic.

Certain religions like Christianity, through the bible, teach it's faithful the rights and wrongs of earthly life in order to move on to the after life on good terms with the Man. Thus, boosting a persons morality, his/her sense of right and wrong.

To answer the question, I guess I'd say yes, if the religious person practices what he preaches, that is if he/she takes in what he/she is taught in his/her religion properly, then yes. Most religious people are morally healthy.

    So which would you sit?

(You must dislike religion as a whole from the last few post I seen from you)

I suppose, it depends on how the person was raised, I have above average morals, but compared to my mates...I am almost like a saint :)

I had all of the catholic rituals done, but I do not sit and pray, nor do I use my sundays at a church (my family ended up fighting afterwards...no matter what we'd always fight).

But there has been people I met who are...a little radical in their beliefs.

But regardless of your religion, people should just respect one another, and encourage peace, love, and the right thing...

Not like these terrorist who take it too far...or certain religious websites who seem to post nothing but hatred for certain races, despite many followers being of the faith...

THe world is really messed up :(

So you're saying Religion has no longer has a say in one's morality? Even if say a person is Catholic, you won't give him the benefit of the doubt that he might be an innately good person?

I don't know, I might be sounding a bit stupid here, but no matter how whack Religion sounds, Something or Someone is above us all. It's a necessity man can't live without, that idea of a supreme being.

Like I said, depends how one was brought up, if they were taught good but no religion, they would be good, if they were brought up religiously but taught wrong, then they'd be bad.

The only supreme beings I know exist are politics, my work bosses and Seph ::)

I do however also respect those who still hold onto religion provided that they don't try to ram their preachings down my thrat forcefully, nor be one of those violent radicals/raving lunitics.

Aaah. Okay okay. I respect and acknowledge your thoughts my friend. I think so too. It all comes down to the person and what's inside their minds and hearts.

Well, except on that supreme being part, for I still do believe in someone of higher powers than us humans.
