Is anyone familiar with this story?

I got this from a forum discussing unconditional love and whatnot, and was hoping that if any of you guys are familiar with this story. I would very much like to read the original version..please help.

This is an improvised version...woot!

I've read this story a very long time ago when I was doing my thesis way back in college, procrastination, hehe. I'd like to find the original material but it would be really inconvenient for me to go back to the University library, so i-paraphrase ko nalang ung story from what I can recall.

There was an old man with a dog. He lived in his barn for a very long time after his wife died. He looked after the barn because his wife loved the animals since they weren't blessed with kids. So, they had a neighbor who is very unfriendly and mean, and everything. He dislike his neighbors and kept a huge "No Trespassing, Trespassers shall be shot" sign on his backyard.

One stormy night, the old man went out to buy some foods and supplies from the town. He left his dog on the porch. After several hours of being gone, the dog got agitated and started looking for his master. He then wondered along the neighbors lawn. The bitter old neighbor was quick to spot the dog and was very furious. So he loaded his gun and fired three shots, one of which hit the dog on it's chest. The dog still managed to return home, but unfortunately, after several minutes, with lots of blood lost, the dog passed away.

When the old man returned, he saw blood trails on the porch. He followed the trails nervously and found the body of his poor friend, cold and bloody, lifeless. He then heard the shouting of his neighbor saying, "I'd shoot anything that comes into my lawn that is not mine. I couldn't care less about that stupid bloody dog of yours!"

The old man went to a local law firm the day after and spoke to several lawyers. He wanted to sue the man. The lawyers asked him if he's serious and how much money does he plan to waste on such case. He put an old bag of coins on the table, which was his entire life savings, and gave it to them, begging for help. The lawyers laughed and disagreed. A young lawyer summoned all his courage to stand up against his peers and decided to help the man. He was then labeled as the crazy kid.

On the court, people laughed at the old man and the lawyer. The case seemed to be a suicide mission for the both of them. On the final argument, however, tables were turned after the young lawyer delivered his speech. He said, "Who among you decided to love? And how many of you knew the meaning and how it is to really love? A dog, which is the most common living creature that knows the meaning of unconditional love, is taken for granted. Why is this as such? You leave them at the porch and they patiently wait for your return. Upon your arrival, they greet you with such enthusiasm like they did not see you in years. They still remain cheerful, ignoring their aches and pains, without complaining. They eat the same food everyday and yet they are grateful for it. They understand when you are too busy to give them time. And that they lick your hand even if you can't give them anything to eat. Do we not recognize such beings as valuable members of our families? I dare you all to think."

After that, the crowd shed tears and the people were moved on the event. The neighbor was sentenced to pay a sum of money to the old man. And the old man was quite overwhelmed with happiness with the justice that his ever loyal friend just received.

This was actually a true story that happened in the United States. That was the day when the United States had a whole new perspective on their pets. We can see unconditional love everywhere, we tend to overlook them when its really right under our very noses. Families, friends, pets... There are many things that we take for granted. One can see how humans treat dogs, chained, caged, still they don't fight back and demonstrates the eagerness to be with you even if you beat them or do anything cruel to them. They love you despite of your looks, attitudes, and values. Even if you treat them as a slave, or as a friend, they would always see you as their master. True unconditional love. So, open your eyes, understand that if everyone lives like a dog (figuratively speaking), the world could become a better place.

I doubt this is the origin of the story, but it has some other examples as well.

A beautiful story, and it illustrates that people can be callous, but they can also still be moved to do the right thing.
Animals work on instinct, humans on free will. Yet the animals choose who they care for as much as we do.

In the lawyers speech he says dogs wait patiently, but the old man's dog wandered off. Why is unconditional love so desirable? It's founded on the dog's ignorance and peoples desperate need for attention even if there is no real emotional value because the doesn't understand such feelings or the situation it's life is based on at all.

;_; Both stories. Dammit.
To be fair if anyone ever hurt my dog I would actively seek vengeance. God I would tear that guy apart with meat hooks ;_; And that poor kitty.

The cat story reminds me of a kitten I semi-rescued a few months ago. A little black kitten was wandering the streets trying to get people to take it home or give it attention and he happened to stay outside my house longer than the others. I went outside scooped him up and took him home for a bit. I gave him water and some tinned sardines...and put down newspaper just in case. I let him sleep on my bed and he kept snuggling into me and rubbing his head on me <3 <3 Sadly my dad made me put him back outside...but he did call the PDSA which was good I guess. It was worth it to make the little guy so happy even if only a few hours though; he was so malnourished
