My computer's internet speed is 100 kb/sec. Can I do something myself to increase the speed or do I have to contact my local dudes?

most likely you will need to have your connection upgraded, which means paying more for it.

Is it easy? If I just contact them and ask them, they'll upgrade my connection immediately?

Depends on the kind of cable you have running to your house, if it's copper and it's a long way from a central then you might be out of luck, if it's fiber then you definitely get an upgrade.

With a 1mbit connection I'd say the chance of being able to upgrade without any hassle are quite high, if close enough to a central you can essentially have a 20mbit with copper.

What Seph said is also dependent on the equipment at the telephone exchange being able to suport higher speeds. Assuming all the conditions are favourable and you go ahead with an upgrade, it should be completed in 48 hours to a week.

    A download accelerator?

that wont make an internet connection faster. It can sometimes make files download faster, but not faster than the connection is capable of.

YOU GUYS ARE SO LUCKY! here in new zealand, where i live anyway, broadband isnt even available! (anywhere else the lines are so old if more than around 1000 people in your area are on it lags horribley; it may as well be dial up)

i had to pay top dollar to get wireless broadband, and pay for around 1mbps (which is mega fast here in NZ) but only get around 100kbps due to trees being in the way and some other factors that we're getting a technician out in a week or so to fix.

if america didnt have so many guns, and australia had less spiders, i would go there just because of the broadband!

I agree with you, I live in NZ as well, and the internet here is so slow, I had to resort to WorldNet isp, which costs about 60 per month, with about 20 GB limit.

i know! did you know some third world countries have higher broadband than us? disgusting isnt it?

i had a look at worldnet. down our road we dont even have those copper lines, so we cant even get the cheapest kind of cable broadband. if i did, worldnet would now be my first choice. are those prices in NZD?

Yeah, it is in NZD. So annoying though that NZ doesn't get good internet speeds. I guess we're left out.

Can you tell me more about speedconnect? does it work if your using ADSL? I'm currently getting up to 8meg. The other day i carrried out a internet speed test, and It was 6.5meg! can this be speeded up? (using speedconnect)

No. ADSL is a variable speed 'best effort' connection. You get the fastest stable speed the line is currently capable of supporting, affected by outside factors such as the number of other people on the exchange and even the weather. 6Mbit is about average for 'up to 8Mbit' connections.

can someone please explain internat speed to mee? i just dont get it... i pay for 1000kB/s right? and it says on my download its around 112kbps. i called my isp and they said that was right, it wasnt going slow at all. they said its because kB/s and kbps are different?
