Well, I have a problem which started up around 2 days ago - when I decided to change my IP address from dynamic to static for my laptop.
Neither Opera, or Firefox, or any other browser I've tried has let me get into certain websites no matter how many times I've cleared my cache/reloaded the page etc.

Weird thing is , these appear to be just random websites; like gbatemp or ultimate-guitar for instance, whilst gamefaqs and romu still work.

I tried switching back to a dynamic IP but it made no difference, it's the same "Connection Closed by Remote Server" issue in Opera, and "Unable to Connect" message in Firefox everytime.

    Please help!

You normally cannot choose whether your IP address is Dynamic or Static. This is chosen by your ISP. Some ISPs give you a static IP address, others have a dynamic address that changes every time you connect with your modem, others update at set times, etc.

So the question to ask is what settings were you changing, exactly? How is your home network and internet connection setup? What IP address did you try to change from static to dynamic?

Sorry, it isn't changing it from Dynamic.
I assigned a specific IP address for my computer, whereas before it was set to automatically assign an IP address.
And I made sure that the IP address I used was within the range assigned to the router.

    Security: WPA-PSK
I'm able to ping my IP just fine, so there's no connection issues between the laptop and the router.
I changed the settings by going into the control panel and accessing the properties of IPv4, and assigned the DNS, Subnet Mask, and gateway address which I got from my Router Status.

One other thing; I installed the Witcher at around the same time that these problems started popping up as well; and apparently one of the drivers for the game is incompatible with Win7, although I don't think that's the cause of the problem.

The websites I'm trying to open work perfectly well on other computers on the same network.

Anything else you need to know?

why did you want to change that setting anyway?
the only time I had to give a specific IP was when I was sorting out that stupid NAT shit on the Xbox.

I was forwarding a port in uTorrent, and needed to create a static IP to do so.

its usually not a good idea to statically assign an IP within the DHCP pool. It needs to be in the same subnet, but outside the DHCP range, otherwise the address you have statically assigned to the computer could be dynamically assigned to another machine, creating an IP address conflict.

Either way, you are NATed. Your internal IP has nothing to do with internet sites.

Would changing the range of IPs the router uses be a good idea, so that the one I'm using now lies outside it?

And if my problem with the websites isn't caused by the IP address then I haven't got a clue what's causing it...
If it's of any use this is the guide I used to change the IP address.

post the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway of the computer, and post the IP/subnet of the router (INTERNAL) and the DHCP range.

    IP Address: 192.168.0.254
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

    DHCP Range
    Starting:192.168.0.2
    Ending: 192.168.0.254

Not sure how to get the Internal Subnet of the router though. Is it the IP address of the ADSL Port?
If it's the IP address under the LAN port: 192.168.0.1

Bloody 'ell. I really shouldn't have messed around with these things before researching in depth!

change your DHCP range to a lower ending number and use a number above that for the computer. (e.g. change it to 192.168.0.250)

It hasn't sorted the website problem, but thanks for the advice!
Should prevent any IP clashes from appearing.

uTorrent appears to be going faster now, so I've achieved my original aim!
Somehow Bonjour has reappeared on the computer, and I've had problems before with that, so I'll try uninstalling it.
I ran the Windows Connection troubleshooting-program-thing, and it says that there may be a problem with my firewall; but I've checked all of the settings on the AV I use and they all seem to be configured correctly...

    Uninstalling Bonjour hasn't done anything.

no it wouldn't sort out the website problem, that's completely unrelated.

    *Initiate self - facepalm*

It turns out that Peerblock was blocking the IPs of those websites.
And I'd completely forgotten to mention that I'd installed it at around the same time I changed my laptop IP!
First thing that came to mind whenever these issues started up, was me fiddling around with my internet settings; hadn't even thought of this!

Thanks for the advice concerning IP settings Loony!
