Sony has announced that the latest firmware update (v3.21) will remove the "Install Other OS" feature from the older PS3s. This is a response to the publication of an exploit by hacker George Hotz.

You can read a BBC article here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8594720.stm

    Sony's blog on the update - http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/28/ps3-firmware-v3-21-update/

I belive this too, but from what I just found..it'd make sence that they patch out other os functions...

You can rip blue ray movies via the ps3 it's self ::)

You loose the partion, to even update you must be on ps3 firmware not linux.

Strong chance this isn't a joke despite the numbering (3.20 is missing-apparently the dev's have it).

For slim owners it doesn't matter since WE can't do it anyway, and because that ps3 exploit...it seems likly...we shall see...I know I'm kicking arse on their forums if it turns out to be a joke-look at the anger even by non linux users!

I have been trying to find any quoted responses from someone in Sony about this "update". No luck as of yet but I do see that the original info has been re-posted by Charlotte Panther. Head of PR, SCEE here - http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/03/29/ps3-firmware-3-21-coming-april-1st/

This makes me think that this update is no joke.

Why would the head of PR announce a firmware update?

It would seem that Charlotte Panther has the job of posting all new news on that blog, this was a re-post from the original post made by, Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media. Mr Seybold has previously posted info on earlier firmwares and on such things as network maintenance so this new post by him is well within his remit.

Yet still no official comment by Sony on this, I expect there will be some new info if or when this thing goes live tomorrow.

Quote from geohot: The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout it's life cycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field.

And Talking about PS3 I don't doubt about it, really, it's a shame...kinda sad and true so what can i say more than PS3 now you can suck on xbox 360?
