strangly when i press L and R during the match, nothing happens. is there a special time i have to press?

if your really struggling press the hand in the corner which puts the game in a mini time out than press and hold L or R this works as well. You can also do it when your characters are about to tackle, dodge, shoot or using a goal keeping move
