which way of downloading updates? the one beside the lock button in the start up menu?, or the Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Windows Update way? or some other way?

Indeed, it sounds like malware. I recommend Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware; it's a great tool for scanning for and removing malwares. If that doesn't cut it, you could try Dr. Web's Cure It. (this one's a bit more extreme, I'd say), another great software for malware removal.

Or a system wipe and get windows 7 running.

I'll be doing this soon...when my laptop is booting up and get's to the desktop, it tends to black out for a second, avg full edition doesn't detect errors...

But I haven't updated the OS in ages, so from vista to 7 it shall be.

    Gavilatius,

Does this description match to what you are experiencing?

If so, you better do a boot virus scan.

I don't think so, I had Vista and I never once had a problem with it. You may have a virus that attaches itself to OS files, which could effect your entire system, It may even leave damage after it has gone

Virus or your graphics chip is failing because its outdated. Or you monitor is failing because it might be out of date. I had the same problem, new monitor no problem
If you have a laptop its possible the wires leading to the screen could be damaged

monitors and graphics cards do not fail because they are out of date.
