Yes, it makes a sound. If I was to put a recorder in the woods and left and come back later after the tree falls, of course it will pick up the sound. There really is no debate to it.

This is not the 1800s. We know it makes a sound. This post reminds me of an argument ultra brought up a long time ago about closing your eyes and nothing being there, and subsequently calling everyone who disagreed with him materialists.

Why wouldn't it make a sound? Its just like if you leave a TV on and you leave so you can't hear it, it still makes a sound.

definative proof that trees make a noise when there's nobody around. stick a video camera in a forest and wait for a tree to fall down. come back, play back the tape and you'll hear the trees making a noise. they'll be talking about everyday stuff like global warming and why some nut was walking around with a video camera filming trees.

if there is no human being with eardrums to be vibrated by the fluctuations in air pressure caused by the falling tree, then i suppose there is no 'sound' by your definition.
