Well as you all mostly know, I use IDM for all my downloads, and I recommend it to anyone... Well today I updated it, and used the same crack/keygen that work with the previous 6.xx Beta...IDM fought back. :(

Every MINUTE IDM would give me a message, and no matter whether I clicked X or OK, it would open up their webpage demanding I buy it before they give me ANY support on removing it. =/ I could NOT uninstall it through control pannel, the message would appear even if it was closed, and it was acting like spyware...I ended up formatting to get rid of it, because it seemed there was no other way...Now I come to you guys today asking for the best FREE download manager... Never again do I pirate something that connects to the internet...

Feel free to laugh at my mistake, use it to not do it yourself, or w/e...DO NOT BASH MY MISTAKE....

Mods/Admins, please don't lock, this is a request topic with a story of humility....

Wow, just like the Bearflix one of the students of my co-faculty did on her netbook. It was like a virus and couldn't access the web because it wants to download something first.... I would have fixed it if i had the time, so yeah, why get a pirated download manager if it can be free?

I use flashget/flashgot tandem, i got it free, so there is my suggestion unless, IDM means something else, then I apologize.

Hell Jdownloader is fine for me, never gives me issues (though it sorta gets freaked out by mediafire).

Plus its safer becos with one-click hosters you really can't get caught. :D

    "free download manager"

That is what I use for sigular downloads, and jdownloader as suggested is best for megaupload and rapid share ;)

And this is why I block all internet activity that is unneeded, even from legit software.

EA wants to connect to the internet...DENIED!
Adobe whatever wants to connect to the internet...DENIED!

I would suggest going to the Program Files, manually deleting the program's directory (whatever the program is called), and running a registry cleaner to clear out the now unused registry keys related to that software (DO NOT delete any registry keys unless you know for sure it is related to the software and if you know specifically what keys are related to the software then just use regedit, but chances are you don't). Then, reinstall it using the setup that you originally had, NOT the updated installer, run the keygen, and block the internet activity.

Software that wants to connect to the internet is easy to circumvent by blocking the request, or by creating a loop using the hosts file.

But the issue is, IDM NEEDS to connect to the internet, otherwise it can't download. =/

    (Yes, I block everything to :p )

Okay, try cryptload, does a few less servers than JD, but whatever works works, y'know?

You can set it to block specific addresses, as well as block specific processes from connecting to the internet.

Most programs I use have two processes, one that is the actual program, and one that is pretty much the anti-piracy checker.

The program I use also not only blocks as a firewall, but also can be used to block certain processes from creating/deleting registry values, creating new files, etc. etc. etc.

If I knew more about IDM, there's probably a way to still give it access to write files, and access to the internet for downloading, but lockdown the anti-piracy part.

These rules might help the lambs new to software piracy. I have not read the rest of the topic bar the first post because yeah.

Rule no. 1: Never update a cracked program using their update utility, always download a newer cracked version or keep your current version. An update nag screen is preferable to an anti-piracy nag screen.
Rule no. 2: If there is a freeware program that does exactly the same thing, get that.
Rule no. 2.5: Alternatively, consider portable apps, they don't need to be cracked at all.
Rule no. 3: If the program connects to the internet. Check out the settings diligently, it might download the updates and install them automatically.
Rule no. 4: Never use a SIG changer, if a program requires you to change your SIG you're better off buying it.
    Rule no. 5: System Restore.

    Yeah.

My own (crappy) download manager FTW.

If you want a download manager, consider using FlashGet. Free and easy and stupid all at once.

I love portable apps. They come pre-cracked, which makes it so much easier. The only issue with them is that sometimes antivirus programs will quarantine the crack without you knowing. I plugged in my external HDD to my friend's computer and all of my portable shit was quarantined.

    What the hell is SIG?
