i never face a problem like this before and google doesnt help.

so here is my problem, my nearly 5 years old linksys router cant detect my modem (cant dail up to DNS server, but using windows network connection, it can establish a connection) which also nearly 5 years old. but after i switch in a new router (same brand and model), it work fine until a few days later, same problem happen again and when i switch back to my old router, it work fine again...

my guess is the modem time is up, but i'm not so sure about it.

anyone who know their hardware better then me can give me some advice?

does the modem work fine on its own, without the router?

yes the modem work fine without the router, when i connect it directly to the pc and dail it manually.

then it can be presumed the problem is somewhere after the modem. Check the cable, and see if you can get a different (Not same model) router to try. Ideally not a linksys

nope, swap the cable and it still cannot detect, i dont think the original cable got problem otherwise i wont able to connect at all (i think thats why cable problem never cross my mine).

also to its weird that after i disconnect the router for a few mins (round 10+mins) it work again.

i'm going to try update the router's firmware to see if that help (never update since i got it)

i been searching around for the lastest fimware for WRTC54GC ver.2.0 and it seems there is no update for it.

sorry, forgot about this. You ought to replace the router. I can highly recommend a ubiquiti airrouter. http://www.ubnt.com/airrouter My mate has one and I love it.
