I had 1.18 but I think thats old?

Yep, it's the latest official. R4DS has stopped the official firmware development long time ago. It's recommended for you to use YSMenu as an additional firmware to run DSTT firmware in your R4 though, since it's still updated. Look in here for details.

(By the way, you can also use the much easier premade YSMenu Jhon 591 posted but it's not a 'legal' way since Yasu, the original creator of YSMenu, doesn't like his software to be downloaded from anywhere else... But it runs perfectly fine though.)

Yes, it's the reason lots of users on other forums never post a premade YSMenu, they said Yasu doesn't like his software to be found on anywhere else and said that he'll stop making new updates if he finds one. So yeah, technically it's against the terms and conditions of the creator to post a premade YSMenu. I don't know the truth of this story though. :-\

 

also before this I couldnt save pokemon then use it again after does this sort that problem?

Yes you down't boot ysmenu.nds if you what your games to run with kernal v1.18, and run ysmenu.nds for games that down't play with kernal v.1.18
