hi i recently bought a new laptop and i went to the system properties just to have a quick look at what i have. it originally has 4gb ram but when i go to system properties to have a look at the ram it says 3gb usable in brackets next to 4gb ram. so does that mean that i only have 3gb ram for myself coz i think its using 1gb ram on software and stuff.

It means it's possibly boosted like mine, mine is 2gb but it's boosted to 3gb.

most likely it means its got a 32bit OS and 1GB graphics memory, meaning it can only use 3 of the 4GB (32bit OSes can only address 4GB of memory in total. This includes graphics memory, which gets priority for the available address space). Alternatively it may be using shared memory for graphics, in which case 1GB is assigned to the graphics chip and is unavailable for system use.
