How to Overclock an AMD Athlon XP 1800+? Is it possible to do such a thing on a processor that came out in 2002? Also, what is overclocking again? My PC specs:AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 256MB of RAm 40GB HHD
Your can overclock your CPU in your BIOS by adjusting the frequency (which for AMD is set on 200) by changing that to 201 202 you can overclock it (I have a AMD Dual Core 5200+ (2.6GHZ) and I've overclocked it to 210 and that I've got my CPU running at 2.8 GHZ) You can also do it in windows but then you'll need to have installed Nvidia system tools and need to have a Geforce on board graphics card otherwise you can only overclock in your BIOS
you dont need onboard geforce graphics, you need a motherboard with a nvidia chipset. some boards and processors do not allow overclocking the FSB is not necessarily 200 If you're using a stock (ie provided with the CPU) cooler then don't overclock, if your case has poor airflow dont do it either. you will void your warranty by doing it, and it is easily possible to permanently damage the cpu doing it, so if you don't know exactly what you are doing then don't do it.
I stand by on this. If you honestly want to (Though why you would on the specs you said), then read up on it first, read up a lot. It's best off, unless it's a test machine, to just leave it, unless you have read up and understand what to do.
Okay, I want to overclock so my PC can run faster. It's old, the case was from an IBM PC! I'm pretty sure it's a stock fan and since the CPU came out in 2002, I'm pretty sure the warrenty ended years ago. I might get a new PC in June, or by Birthday (July), or on the Back-To-School Sale, or for Christmas. Either way, I have to wait 6-12 more more months for a new PC! My dad said so but I'm sure that he will get me a bad one! Possibly: 1GB RAM, Pentium, 120GB HHD, something like that but if he doesn't even get me one or he does but I'm not happy (I will wait until September) the PC he got me, I will just go buy my own regardless of what he said. He is an idiot in so many ways...
Overclocking is dangerous. You REALLY have to know what you're doing, otherwise you'll end up without a PC. I suggest that you read A LOT about overclocking before attempting to overclock your CPU. And I don't know if it's true, but some people says that the older the CPU/video card, the risky it is to overclock.
