How to manually update Minecraft?

    Being the lazy guy I am, I got a minecraft client... version 1.1 or whatever.... how do I update this?

    Buy the game, run client, it'll update itself.

    No other way, unless you want to download another version.

    There's the rub, I want 1.6.6 not 1.7 because the mods I want work on 1.6.6

    Can't you just wait for the modders to update their mods to work on 1.7?

    Yeah, that's what I do. I mean, Herobrine was removed in 1.7. Why would anyone want any version before the version that removes Herobrine?
