Ok so I recently got a 4th Gen iPod Touch and I love it. So all my friend's iPods are jailbroken and I was considering to do it on mine. But before I do I have several questions in relation. I have a little knowledge about the topic but I wanna know as much as possible before I get into aything. 1.) Which is the safest application that can jailbreak a 4th Gen iPod touch running on iOS 4.2.1 ? (all my friends seem to be using Cydia) 1.1) How do you jailbreak? (instruction part comes here) 1.2) where can I download the jailbreak apps? 2.) What is the worst case scenario that can happen to my iPod if I make a mistake in jailbreaking and or possible future mishaps if jailbreaking was successful? (In other words, the cons and possible cons of jailbreaking) 3.) Will my current apps be deleted when I jailbreak? and If I accidentally shut off my iPod or upgrade in the future thus null/void the jailbreak, will all apps disappear or just jailbroken ones? 4.) Will Apple ever find out I jailbroke my iPod and will it affect my warranty in anyway? Side not questions Do you guys have any suggestions to help me prolong my battery life? since mine dies relatively fast since I always use it. Thanks for all the help.
1.) Which is the safest application that can jailbreak a 4th Gen iPod touch running on iOS 4.2.1 ? (all my friends seem to be using Cydia) 1.a. Depending on your computer OS, you should use a program called greenpois0n. This is the latest form of jailbreaking that does not require the use of a computer to boot your iPod touch in a jailbroken mode. Hence for this method being called a "teather-less" jailbreak. 1.1) How do you jailbreak? (instruction part comes here) 1.1.a. You would jailbreak your new iPod touch running 4.2.1 firmware by downloading the program from Greenpois0n's website and follow the on screen prompts. This is extremely easy to follow and will take you about five minutes to complete the jailbreak. 1.2) where can I download the jailbreak apps? 1.2.a. You can download the jailbreak app listed above in the green colored link. 2.) What is the worst case scenario that can happen to my iPod if I make a mistake in jailbreaking and or possible future mishaps if jailbreaking was successful? (In other words, the cons and possible cons of jailbreaking) 2.a. The worst possible scenario is that you somehow mess up the jail break process, and that would mean that you would have to use iTunes to completely restore your iPod touch to factory condition. You will not lose any data from your iPod if you have your media files, ie movies or music, already saved on your iTunes. You can be sure that your iPod will not break if jailbroken. 3.) Will my current apps be deleted when I jailbreak? and If I accidentally shut off my iPod or upgrade in the future thus null/void the jailbreak, will all apps disappear or just jailbroken ones? 3.a. All of your current apps will be removed from your iPod Touch, however since you have not jailbroken your idevice yet, everything is still stored on your computer that you sync your iPod Touch with. Once your iPod is jailbroken, all of the apps that you have saved on iTunes will sync back to your iPod Touch as if nothing had happened. Jailbreaking your iPod does not void the warrenty because Apple announced last year, or year before, that jailbreaking your devices is not illegal, however they will insist that you don't do it anyways. 4.) Will Apple ever find out I jailbroke my iPod and will it affect my warranty in anyway? 4.a. Apple will not find out if you jailbroke your iPod, and it will not affect your warranty in anyway. 5.) Do you guys have any suggestions to help me prolong my battery life? since mine dies relatively fast since I always use it. 5.a. I find that the best way to prolong battery life is to minimize the brightness settings, turn off all unused wireless connections, use headphones compared to the built in speakers, and try not to take HD videos all of the time. Best of luck and if you still have any questions just let me know, miros
Sorry forgot to mention that my computer is running on windows 7. Does that change anything? will I still use greenpois0n? And you mentioned "theather-Less" what does that mean? also how do I "restore" my iPod assuming I don't want it to be "jailbreak" anymore? also my friend sent me a site apptrackr.org, if ever i end up jailbreaking can i get my apps from there? Also thank you so much for taking the time and helping me by answering my questions. It is very much appreciated
Sorry forgot to mention that my computer is running on windows 7. Does that change anything? It means that you have to run your Windows 7 in XP compatabilty mode in order for the jailbreak process to occur. Once you have jailbroken your iPod, then you can just run windows as normal. I will not be much help with the Windows crap because my speciality is in the Mac OSX. will I still use greenpois0n? You will still be able to use greenpois0n. And you mentioned "theather-Less" what does that mean? This means that you will be able to boot your iPod touch into a jailbroken state without needing to use a computer to do so. Before the release of greenpois0n if one wanted to jailbreak their iDevice, they would have needed to boot the device with the aid of the jailbreaking software so that the device loads in a hacked mode. This is now unnecessary thanks to the hard work from the people on Chronic Dev Team. also how do I "restore" my iPod assuming I don't want it to be "jailbreak" anymore? You restore your iPod, assuming that you do not want it to be jailbroken anymore, by connecting your iPod to your computer and opening iTunes. From there your iPod will show up on the left hand side of the window where devices are listed. You would click on the device and on the screen there should be a restore to factory settings button that you can click. It will prompt you to ensure that you want to restore your iPod, because your iPod will be completely erased and a fresh/latest version of iOS will be installed on your iPod. also my friend sent me a site apptrackr.org, if ever i end up jailbreaking can i get my apps from there? Apptrackr allows you to download cracked .ipa files (essentially iTunes apps) that you can drag straight into iTunes and sync with your jailbroken device. If you do jailbreak your iPod, you can certainly get your apps from there, however most people use the Installous application that you download directly from Cydia that gives you the ability to directly download the iTunes application you want (for free) and install it directly on your iPod without the need to sync it to your computer. Best of luck, miros
Such a fail, Just tried to jail break my iPod twice, and it was a fail. First time i needed to restore, 2nd was just a normal fail. Is there an eaier way to jailbreak or do i have to put up with the hold power, home release power thing?
Yes, once you jailbreak your iPod, load Cydia, go to resources, add repository, and type in "http://cydia.hackulo.us". This source will allow you to download several different applications as well as some system files that will make your device more compatible with apps that you download from Installous. The only way to jailbreak your iPod is to put the device in DFU mode, and that is done by following the on screen instructions that you encounter when running the jailbreak software, greenpois0n. To my knowledge there is no other method of jailbreaking your iDevice that does not require you to put your iPod in DFU mode. Best of luck, miros
