Ok so recently I have been getting to urge to play video games again. My last console was the ps2 and after that I went portable, PSP and DS. I always said to myself the games of them would be enough but so far they aren't so much and there aren't any nice new games being released this past year which makes it really hard. So I was thinking of buying a PS3 since it's gone cheaper now but it's almost September and school is about to start and I will be totally engrossed in school work I don't know if I'll have enough time to invest to playing games on it. Then I though why not go portable again 3DS or PSP Vita. I don't know. Then there's the whole WiiU... So I'm asking for ADVICE on what direction to go. Give me specs, pros and cons. Anything to help me see what direction to go. Thanks

PS3 is the only sure bet. The other three are a gamble because they are new and there isn't really anything announced for them yet. There's a high chance of the wiiu turning out like the wii, fun for a few minutes but you quickly get bored of it. PS3 is established and has a large library of games, both current and upcoming. Plus it can play PSX games too.

Of course, there's always PC, with skyrim coming out in november.

I'd say go with 360. There are tons of great games out for it already, and tons more coming out. If you don't mind paying for online, the online services are great. PS3 is fine too, though the online service is pretty shit.

Yeah your right. I wish mods were available to console players. Legitimately, anyway ;)

I'm not into online gaming so much. I think I'll go with PS3. I've always been for Sony or Nintendo.

Just how shitty is PlayStation Network..? Curious here

Arguably more shitty than XBox Marketplace, as xbox has Deal of The Week and isn't easily hacked ;)

Well it isn't absolutely shitty, but the downloads take a horrendously long time, and on top of downloading on demand games and game demos, you have to install them for about 5 minutes, the store also isn't updated as frequently as 360, and it doesn't get most of the good arcade games 360 does. You can play online just fine though, I rarely get lag, but to talk you have to get a crappy made for PS3 wireless mic, where as xbox you can use any old phone headset, and even then nobody talks on PS3, or rarely from what I've seen.
Xbox Live is much more secure, runs a lot better/faster, downloads faster, the store is updated more frequently (New arcade games every Wednesday WOO), they have good deals every week too.

I'm pretty sure PS3 can use any USB headset, and the update downloads are capable of saturating my internet connection consistently, which very little else is (downloads from microsoft's website can't). You have no grounds for saying that xbox live is more secure; it has simply not been targeted on the scale that PSN has.

Well, you get what you pay for I suppose. If xbox live was free it would probably suck a lot more

Nah, I'm pretty sure it has to be some PS3 made one. And I just think its funny, because everybody else BUT xbox is being targeted by hackers, and whose to say nobody has tried? I'm sure if Xbox left peoples personal data unencrypted like Sony did with the PS3, people would be all over it. No, I think Microsoft is a bit smarter than that and won't make dumbshit security decisions like Sony did with that. I'm not saying 360 is hackproof, just saying its probably more difficult to hack.

microsoft and security do not belong in the same sentence. Their software is full of security holes, some of which have been present for DECADES because they cant be bothered to fix them. No other software house in the world has such a cavalier attitude to security as microsoft has. Also you're ignoring how many times hotmail has been compromised because of 'dumbshit security decisions' that you claim they're too smart to make. Microsoft has a far worse reputation than sony when it comes to security.

Meh, I've never had any issues with hotmail, but okay then.

not really, can't find a damn thing in that place as easily and more annoying to backtrack compared to PS Store. Ps3 also has weekly deals, they're just not advertised as "Deal of The Week". You'd be surprised what goes on in the background, your computer could be hijacked atm and you'd never know it.

I'd say either go with PS3 or PC, PC has steam <3 and i love steam XD
Steam has a great community, it's free, and it also has daily deals, seasonal specials, etc. great money saver and great value.

I think I'm settled with getting a PS3. It's just a matter of when. Do you think its better to buy during holiday season ?

I would have said that usually the best time to buy would be the january sales. Or black friday if you're a US resident.

I'm not from the US so I guess that's out of the question. are prices down on january because it's after holidays and no one buys stuff?

Yep. They want to shift all the christmas stuff, so there will be plenty of clearance sales everywhere you go (even online)
