How PS3 Games installation works?

I've heard many people saying they installed their PS3 games into their Hard drive , does that mean they don't need the CD in the PS3 to play the game? so for example I can install Uncharted 2 on my PS3 and then lend the CD to my friend and have them installing the same game with the same CD on their PS3?

Some games have installations to help load the game faster (it doesn't read the BluRay too fast). Uncharted 2 doesn't have an install.

No they still need the disc to play.

Actually you can still borrow the games, the installs just reduce loading times as said...I'm lent some of my Installing games to friends, it went fine overall.

It does add crap to the harddrive though that you mayu not need, if a game ask if you want to install but isn't needed like ridge racer 7 does, say no...and out up with 30 second load times.

Depends on the size of your HDD. Mine's 320Gb, so I just install all my games, can always uninstall them later.

    Yours is modded it seems.

I'm using the stock 120gb on my slim, I only install what needs install, so far so good with 60gb free.

I thought slims came with a 250Gb? Mine's a phat PS3, so it's easy to mod, but I got a 320Gb off the shelf (though it might be 160 now I think about it...)

Can I install the game with the CD then play it without the CD?

    Nope (technically it's a blue ray :p )

A mate of mine thought he could do this on his 360 and thought of a "scam" to copy games and send them back to EB games, problem is the install only sends a portion of the game to the HDD to speed load times.

Well my scam of copying the data outright was a far better idea, and I said to myself "why would microsoft add this feature if people can exploit it?".

    XD

    EDIT:

Unless you downloaded the game from the psn, you'd need the disc to play...and you can't copy the psn games :(

It's basically the same as installing games onto your PC, you still need the disk to play.

Unlike pc games there isn't no cd cracks :p

All of my bought games run on those cracks now.

LoL, true. I have somehting similar for most of my games. (A few have patch updates which are too new for the game fixes)

Lucky bastards...I have a 60 GB (which makes like 50 something actually usable...) and most of it is already used up by the several 700 MB DVDrips I have on it. lol...

you do realise the hard disk is intentionally user replacable and upgrading it will not affect your warranty?

I know the value of mine due to it being backwards compatible. And I knew it was upgradeable. I just don't have the money to do so.

If I do it, it's gonna be all out. No point in getting a 120 GB, when I can go much larger than that.

I just use an external drive for my music and crap.

5gb of movies and 1gb of music (rest if on my main backup drive).

It's a 500GB WD portable drive, formatted using "swiss knife" to fat32, sure it's far slower than it's meant to be but it works!

pirate it and you dont need the disk

Or install a no-cd patch, or create a disk image and mount it on a virtual drive, etc. I was using it as a simile to explain installation on the PS3, which has none of these options. ;)

Well what they do is install the game to reduce loading time, install trophies( some have trophies but dont install), and make the game funner to play. You still need the disk because it only installs important or key features of the game into your ps3. Some games even make it optional if you want to install them. This means the maker of the game feels that it runs fast with minor loading but could go faster. Finally installing the game doesnt completely get rid of loading it just makes it alot faster and might make the game look smoother.
