How 'good' is the piracy surrounding Xbox360 and PS3?

So I've been putting off buying a new console for a while now, the last console I had was a PS2 and a PSP back in 2008.

I've decided that I'm going to buy a PS3 or an Xbox360 now.

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to play pirated games on them. I recall with my PS2 I could 'chip' it and then just buy copied games. My PSP on the other hand I had to run cracks to play games downloaded onto the memory stick. However firmware updates often killed my cracks and there's no way to revert the updates.

I'm assuming PS3 will be the same, I'm also assuming that current PS3 will come out with fairly modern firmware which will probably make playing pirated games on it harder.

I know nothing about the Xbox360 though.

So, what can you tell me about it? Is it not worth the effort? I don't mind buying games if they're platinum, but I'm not spending 60 Dollars on a game while living on a 3rd world salary.

    PS3 piracy is very difficult

Yes, and you can't play online. If you like playing with friends you will have to buy the games. (Is there a way to pirate Xbox 360 Live??? If there is then Xbox 360 is better for you).

It is? Don't you just buy a Jailbreak Dongle, jailbreak that bitch, install a custom firmware, download da isos and load them?

It's not that simple. PS3 updates their firmware all the time and the jailbreak dudes are always running behind...

its patched on newer firmwares and even if you have custom firmware it lags behind the official and newer games require a minimum firmware version to play. I had to buy a second PS3 because I was not able to keep the one I had at 3.15 (last firmware with otheros) indefinitely. So I now have one completely updated and one running 3.55 custom firmware.

You can try putting your hacked 360 online, but if Microsoft finds you (which they should, they're quite persistant about it) they will ban the console from Live altogether.

I happened to have bought a used PS3 slim with 3.41, which is perfect for installing CFW. Also, the only reasons to run the current firmware is to play current games and go online.

But, the hackers seem to have found some rather neat tricks lately, hopefully bringing light to 3.6+ firmware games. Also, Uncharted 3 is fully hacked and playable.

As of now, you can still play every pre-3.55 FW game, most 3.56 FW games, and a few 3.6+ games with the right crack.

I've got about 2 TB of games so far, and I hardly miss the newest games out right now.

As far as saying that the PS3 hacking is hard, it's shit easy compared to the Xbox 360. The most work I've had to do to my PS3 is switch out the harddrives, which wasn't even required.

Oh, and you can thank DUPLEX for releasing a TON of PSN games like Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Back to the Future Episodes I-V, God of War: Chains of Olympus HD, God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Since you're hacking whatever you're getting, online play is not an option, and since the online for the PS3 is inferior to the Xbox 360, I'd say you're not missing much online. As far as playing current games like The Elder Scrolls V, COD MW3, Battlefield 3, you've got an entire library of games to play before you get to those.

As far as Xbox 360 flashing, get ready to decipher broken-English tutorials that are so complex, they needed to be indexed, and have fun dealing with Verbatim dual layer DVDs, A LOT of DVDs...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that we can play just about any burned PSX game using homebrew loaders like "Multiman" or the more specialized "PS3 One."

In short, the PS3 is much easier to pirate because it's done through software, not hardware.
Also, don't buy a dongle. Most of those are usually reverse-engineered and then rewritten as software, and then distributed for free.

I keep checking daily for any new developments and it seems we are getting closer to cracking the PS3 encryption keys wide open. And I love that I can install PSN games and Game Data Installs to the external drive. The PS3 scene isn't dead.

That's pretty damn interesting, thanks for that!

I'll probably buy my PS3 at the end of this or next month. It'll most likely be a 160 slim.
I guess I'll bump this thread once I have it and know what firmware I have.

360 isn't that hard. My computer wasn't compatible or else I would have flashed my friend's. The JTag shit throws me off though. I know a guy who has one who used to come on here a lot. Good guy. :)

But anyways, the JTag allows you to play anything from live, original XBOX, and 360 games. Much like hacking a Wii, but more work and a physical mod rather than just software.

It'd be easier if the guides were in English, with clear instructions, instead of this programmer's mumbo jumbo.

If you have a source that has a complete guide, please enlighten me.

I just watched video after video and read everything I could on flashing a 360. You're right about it not being clear-cut, but it was just a hassle to piece together what I needed to do.

Just buy any used PS3 and see if you can have them boot it up for you at the shop so you can casually "inspect" what firmware it has. 3.55 and below is what you're looking for. Do not tell them why you need 3.55, and in fact, when inspecting, don't go directly to the System Settings. Dick around on it first, then go to the spot that you need to go to.

What size HDD is also irrelevant. You can buy a 500 GB, or even 640 GB for around $100 now. You'll be paying more money for a drive you're not even going to use...
