How 'final' is Final Fantasy?

It seems to me that Final Fantasy games are anything but.

Although it just doesn't make sense that it will go on forever, I mean, cool if it does, but everything has to end sometime, right? So where do you think it'll end? XVI? XX? CX? M? Personally, I've got a weird gut feeling about XXVI.

as I said before in another thread, the 'final' bit describes the state of mind of the producer when the first one was released; he was fed up with his games failing, and final fantasy was to be the last one before he threw in the towel.

i would assume that would be right as loony probably knows his gaming or probably have a way to back it up.

i also believe that square have use the title as a motto for their product to sell. when they simply have a game and don't really know what to call it or rather they should consider it to be another franchise, they simply label it final fantasy. when they consider a sequal to it, they'll use the same ff title name and add a subtitle or a part number. you see this for ffx-2 or more precisely ff x part 2, etc....

does it work?! yes and no. people who are familiarize with the ff games would now that it may be good because of the history of the ff games. then again, people also know that the name refers to the company's constant rehash of ideas. so when ff13 [ffxiii] comes out, it may refer to nothing more then a rehash of a game with better graphics or a really good game.

    I don't think it's a constant rehash of ideas.
Yeah some things are kept the same like turn-based gameplay but even that is changing.
They've had regular turn-based, ATB, CTB, and real-time like MMORPGs.
All of the environments have been different, except for maybe the earlier ones.
The only time the story is similar is when it's a sequel, like X-2, Crisis Core and Final Fantasy VII.

    Here's that thread loony mentioned:

I posted there too. Basically the first Final Fantasy should have been the "only" one had Square's top brass's gamble didn't pay off.

Yeah I think it was a forceful towel-throw, I think Final Fantasy was Square's last chance, financially.

I could see the last FF being Final Fantasy XVII. Something about it. Just a hunch. And 9 years from now, you all owe me $10.

Same thing happend to DOA. The creator had been making flops and so they were going to "let him go" so the game was if final chance hence the title "Dead or Alive." The game turned out to be a huge succes.

  8. guys..sorry if my question is OOT, but I have a son who eventually like final fantasy after I downloaded a ROM here, but because I'm so left behind I don't understand about it at all and he demand me to find all series (from the beginning till the last) of the game for NDS but I only find some here. Can somebody help me? Thanks before.

You won't find them, most of the games are for other consoles. One and two were on NES, three to six on SNES, seven to nine on playstation, ten and twelve on PS2. Thats the main series, there are a few spin-offs, and eleven is a PC MMORPG that shouldn't be classed as final fantasy.

thank you for reply and the info, so that means for NDS there's only some of the series available, and those are provided in Romulation? Okay, now..I'm planning to buy the DVDs too, because my son told me about it also. Oh,I feel so lame... :(

    Final Fantasy I - NES/GBA
    Final Fantasy II - NES/GBA
    Final Fantasy III - NES/NDS
    Final Fantasy IV - SNES/GBA/NDS
    Final Fantasy V - SNES/GBA
    Final Fantasy VI - SNES/GBA
    Final Fantasy VII - PSX
    Final Fantasy VIII - PSX
    Final Fantasy IX - PSX
    Final Fantasy X - PS2
    Final Fantasy XI - PC/PS2 - Online
    Final Fantasy XII - PS2

I think. There's other final fantasy games, like Mystic Quest on the game boy.

Mystic Quest is quite nice, although the hook on that pissed me off. Yeah they didn't decide to change the name of Final Fantasy, so they just kept with it. I don't think Final Fantasy will go up to C (100) or even anywhere near it, but the franchise has been going on for a while now, but eventually the people with the original ideas and the people who helped build Final Fantasy's fanbase, will die, and then the ideas and games will just be gay. Active Time Battle is very smart. FFXI sucks balls, because you have to pay a lot :( Yes Square made a lot of gay games that weren't popular or made money for them at all, so they were almost about to close themselves.

It's not very known to many, but there is an actual "Final Fantasy Mystic Quest" on the SNES & no it's not the GameBoy title, it's different.

Yeah I was talking about that one. You have hooks to jump across gaps, and you fight trees and stuff. It's got a Crystal on the title screen.

That game was odd though, there's only one main character who is joined by non-permanent characters at times so that there are two playable characters at one time. The battle is frontal as opposed to the usual baddies on the left heroes on the right format. On the field map, you move through area points as opposed to the free roaming mode. And instead of a usual battle menu, you choose your actions via icons, like in Breath of Fire.

FFXI? tried it for some time. not half bad, brilliant even, then i look at the prices. with that price, the coolest game in the world will look like a cheap spinoff
