    Hi!

On this laptop from my mom, I get the CPU up to 50%.
    Same with scrolling.

Even the mouse moves are 9% CPU!

    Lets discuss CPU highness... :p

My cpu ususally Idles at about 4%, but just moving the mouse has shot it up to near 50% before

This PC gets itself to 100% with just browsing RomU. I don't care, it works good.

Defragmentation doesn't magically speed up computers.

But it does improve the overall performance of the CPU and it can extend the life of it if you do it regularly.

This thread is so amazingly full of fail.

Defrag to improve CPU? Sorry, but you guys should not be in here giving advice. Your hard drive consists of sectors, your hard drive will place your data in the spaces where there's room. When you delete files you make room for new files and your hard drive will use those sectors. With a lot of use your files will be spread out a lot and your large files will get segmented. This means your hard drive will have to do a lot of seeking to read files.

Seeking is slow. When your hard drive is seeking your CPU is essentially just waiting and doing nothing, so defragging can make your computer seem faster. But only because your CPU doesn't have to wait for the hard drive as much. All defragging does is make the files sequential so the amount of seeking is reduced.

It is also largely a left over from the windows 98 days. XP and especially Windows 7 are both decent at preventing fragmentation. After a full year of use my desktop which has a lot of large files on it was only 4% fragmented, which is hardly worth even defragging for.

high CPU usage means you have too many processes running or something is sucking a lot of CPU cycles. malware can cause it

This PC is extremely old. My dad said he had problems before (when I was 5 or something), but he didn't download untrusted things (he only used this PC to use games, like America's Army).

    I'm exactly the other type:
I do not tell my dad this PC has problems with the desktop's background (fixed by now, but I have the feeling it soon returns),
I download everything that interests me (mostly from RomU).
    But you can be right.

EDIT: I have 32 processes running (mostly all things that Windows needs, RocketDock, Fences (desktop sorting) and Opera (my browser).

    good call.
he/she/it even came on irc posing as Moderasian to complain. Seph sent 'em packing, though.
The forum doesn't need that type of person, going around, flaming others so blatantly.
