Harvest Moon - data Entry problems

I'm running Harvest Moon Back to Nature on ePSXe.

My problem barely makes sense. The game starts up; I select New Game; Mayor Thomas appears and says he needs to ask me some questions, so I press 'x' to get to the next screen; "What's your name?" he says, so I try to enter my name, but the game stops recognizing my 'x' button. So I can use the D-pad but I can't enter a name.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is ePSXe configured incorrectly? Is there some setting I need to change?

You need a patch. Use google to search a patch for it.

but I can play it without a patch.

Which version of ePSXe are you using?

 

1.7.0 is the version I have. I downloaded off of the North American version. I deleted and redownloaded the game to make sure, but the problem persists.

 

Try changing the controller configurations.
I haven't been using ePSXe lately (i use pSX), but in the controller config menu you can select, for example, DualShock, Analog, etc.
Sometimes i have issues like thhis with the controller, and that seems to work for me.
Although i have played that game on ePSXe and i never had that problem.
