Whoever remembers that thread, I finally caved to the guy who told me to get a keygen. My question now is, can I get arrested for using a keygen if I bought the game legitimately? Cuz I bought the game from a friend and when I opened the box there was a WalMart warranty for it in there so I know he got it legit.

    Thanks for answers.

    Yes, and no.

It is unlikely that you can be caught using a Keygen as long as you delete all traces of it off your computer when you're finished with it. Also, keygen's are sometimes virus' so be careful. I would say it would be okay due to the fact that the game was bought legitimately and not download illegally.

    I hope this helps.

Yes, just format your hard-drive 11 times and that will get rid of all traces

I removed the easily recovered traces, the AppData folder. Deleted everything I could and pretty much every program on my computer was back to its original settings. You could also clean out the registry :)

You want to get rid of all traces? You may want to try physically beating the hard drive into pieces, dousing those pieces with a flammable substance, and then burning them into ash. Physically destroying the drive beyond all use and repair is the only way to remove all traces of data of any one thing from it.

On topic: Using a keygen is illegal. You did not purchase the product key you used. It is black and white. On the flip side, your odds of being caught using a keygen by an individual that cares are near zero. It's one of those things that as long as you don't flaunt and openly abuse it to hell, you have incredibly low chances of being caught. Generally, if you lose a key, you have to buy another copy of the game or software in question, or find somewhere that you can legitimately buy a new key (ie: Not ebay). In the case of software, sometimes companies will let you contact them for a replacement key IF you have proof of purchase and jump through all of the hoops.

Anyways, yeah, the keygen is illegal, but I highly, highly, highly doubt you'll be arrested over it. Source? I know a lot of people that like free software.

to be completely accurate, replace the bold words with 'lease', because as far as the companies are concerned you never owned the software in the first place, you only rented it from them.
